Same goes for Twitter and all that unnecessary mindless broadcasting of inconsequential and personal trivia.

I use Facebook a lot. I don't use it to tell anyone what I had for breakfast, but it is very useful for networking among the photographers, models, and art groups with which I work. We share info and photos on gallery exhibits, locations, studios, photo shoots, group meetings, etc.

I have not noticed any scumbaggery, but then I am very careful about sharing my personal info and list of friends. Many apps request access to this data, apps which do not need it to function but probably only use it to broadcast ads and spam.

Ed, those ads and other stuff you see are derived from Facebook itself. If you remove all your profile data and also set your browser to Private Browsing then the ads stop as it has no trace of what you have done so doesnt know what to offer you.

I have scuba diving and photography in my Facebook profile so I get scuba and photography ads!

Agreed. Facebook only attracts unwanted attention, usually from people you don't know and have no desire to know.

Another thing about Facebook and other social media is that recruitment agencies and potential employers use it to investigate job applicants, thus if you post something your potential employer disagrees with, you don't get the job. Right to free opinion is not a consideration.

Twitter, Facebook and all the rest......steer clear don't publicly profile yourself. Best way to avoid punch?.....is not to be there.
