we should all know by now about the horse meat **** up .seen all the jokes etc and sat back wondering what the hell is going on ,and what are we really eating . but what astonished me this afternoon was a govement minister on BBC t.v stating that we couldn't ban the import of european meat as it was against EEC rules and regulations .personally i find this attitude stinks and if we have a government that won't act on behalf of the well being of the public its really time for them to go if this was france the lorry drivers would be blockading the ports to stop imports ,the unions would be calling a all out strike ,but we just sit back and take it .and listening to some of the things that have come to light over this it turns out that the rules only apply to certain types of food .i.e the steak and kidney pie you eat should really be called animal meat (unknown source) and kidney pie . whats your views

Well I understand that some people dont want to eat horse, similarly dont want to eat human either but........ Some people dont mind as long as it is cheap! For me I would rather make an educated choice about my food so if it says beef then it comes from cattle, likewise when it is lamb or mutton it comes from sheep. So if it is beef lesagne then it is lesagne made from meat that comes from cattle. Likewise if it says meat lesagne then I want to know where the meat came from. If I wanted horse lesagne then I would go looking for it specifically.

There is no EU regulation that says that food manufacturers have to buy and use imported meat in their processes. They do so for cheapness. But ironically imported meat doesnt have to be inferior. It's down to what they are prepared to purchase...and the purchaser's auditing procedures. I was in Poland and the Soviet Union in the 1990s setting up manufacturing operations for an international food manufacturer. Part of my remit was also to promote some of the meat products that the UK company made. It met with universal distaste. Why? Because these so called 'backward' eastern bloc countries ate freshly home prepared meat products supplied from their local butcher...just like we did in the 1950-60s. The quality difference was undeniable! One of the reasons for me leaving the food industry 18 years ago, and setting up a photography and design company, was my experience in the processed food world and the realisation I was part of the problem. The other was that they offered me serious b*gger off money to stop being a burr under their saddle.

So, you all take exception when you read the ingredient list and the first item is "meat like product"? Where's your sense of adventure?

I've just heard on the news that this suspect meat has come from an abattoir in Roumania. This shocked me. I didn't realise there were any Roumanians still at work. Most are packing for the move to the UK for free handouts.

Seems OK to me as long as I dont have to catch it. However in US I would rather have a steak as it is where I have always managed to get good steaks. Just dont eat steak in Spain unless you want gristle and poor steak.

According to the news, UK is now having issues with spaghetti sauce. Or should we just call it "horsey sauce" from now on. Seems some sauces have tested to be 60 percent horse meat. Earlier today, I put the package of ground beef (?) back in the freezer I had put out to defrost for supper and got out a piece of salmon instead. Looks like real salmon anyway.

I'm really a lover of a fine steak,but have my protein intake reduced from kidney disease so I miss them very much. But the absolute best I have ever had,and I have had a Kobe Steak which is SUPPOSED to be the very best,was in South Africa and it was from Zimbabwe.Superb steak. If you are upset about being served Horse meat you should come here to the US of A. They even get upset here when they kill wild horses for export for human consumption and even take a big exception to using it in dog food. A horse is in a special category here.

A horse is in a special category here. thats the problem ken ,the majority of us brits feel exactly the same way.a horse is a pet animal these days .not part of the food chain .what we going to have next ,badger and fox meat from the proposed culls .and we appear to have a weak insipid gov. that would rather sit in parliment and log on to sex sites about extra marital affairs than deal with the real problems facing our country . perhaps the expression gone to the dogs is coming true ,we will probably be eating them next

I had a Kobe steak in the restaurant in Philadelphia and it was top quality. Dont know where it came from but it was definitely beef and I assumed that it was USA grown! Argentina is also meant to produce very high quality meat.

As far as I know Kobe beef comes from Japan,at least what I had did. It is definitely good as is the price.

quiet funny this morning sky news was outside a rather dodgy looking abbotoir in yorkshire that has just been shut down by the FSA and the disgruntled owner and co workers were throwing snowballs at the sky news team
