Just to bring everything up to date. The last few weeks have been mad a lot of decision making and sorting out. I have decided to bring my pension forward a few years and retire, I have had enough of the rat race and fighting to make a living so as of the 1st May I am finished. In doing that I had to think of what I wanted to do with regards to photo equipment. The two things I want to do is wildlife and family/landscapes and in doing that I don't want too need a donkey to carry my gear around. After a lot of thought and being like Steve and having a foot in both camps, Nikon and Canon, I have ended up going with Canon. Two main reasons for this, 1, is that I don't like the way Nikon is going with the MP count, I don't need or want 24-36mp and dealing with the storage/computing power needs that comes along with it. 2, is the limitation of a light good quality 400mm lens in the Nikon line up. I am glad to see a section in this forum for other cameras as there are a few of us that have a foot in different camps and that those of us that may move on to other brands can still contribute. Time to put the hardhat on.  |

Glad to hear that you have made the decision Iain. It is a difficult and bold decision but speaking from personal experience a very liberating one. I have less money now than before when I was consulting but I have more than enough. No problem if you swap to Canon, I had the feeling that you were looking at other kit. Dont worry you can still hunt here. We will enjoy you photos even if they were taken with a Canon. Have you looked at the new Olympus OM-D it has a stunning range of long lenses. It is 4/3 CCD and the camera handles like an OM2. http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/om-d-camera_om-d_25494.htm If I was changing camera ranges I would look very seriously at this. EVL is the future. The current pixel count and refresh rate may not be quite as good as we see in an OVL but it is getting close. My new Fuji XPro1 has an exceptionally good EVL. |

I'll have a look at that but having some Canon bits from the past I think it will be leaning that way. |

If you already have some investment in Canon then it makes sense to look that way. |

I have a standard zoom and a wide zoom both Canon from before and have used the 400mm f5.6, it is light and pin sharp @5.6 and do for what I need now. I'll keep you informed. |

For a long time canon would give with one hand while punching users in the face with the other (2 stops exposure compensation, 5D mkI and II focusing system, horrible wireless flash etc.) More recently with the advent of the 7d (not to mention the 60d, 5DMkIII and their new radio triggered flash) it's becoming a lot harder to bash them and their users for their past shortsightedness I hope you get on well and keep us posted with what you love and hate about the system Also I posted a link to an excellent 7d guide which opened my eyes to some of its strengths, somewhere on the old forum. I'll try and link to it if I remember when I have more time Incidentally, Canons history has always been to chase the pixels, whose to say the 7D and much later the 5dmkIII replacement won't have you jumping back to nikon?  Btw, do we need a section specifically for Canon, Fuji etc since we have now come full circle and begun using many different brands again! |

Thanks Doug. The 7D is No1 on the list as it ticks all the right boxes and it will be interesting to see how it compares. |

My friend down the road has a 7D and it is a very nice camera. Image quality is top notch. |

Best of luck Iain. I may well follow you into retirement (but not Canon  ) later this year. I am still doing photoshoots and design jobs that come along, but they are becoming less regular, as I no longer chase clients for work... .....and work is now an 'interference' to leisure hours! |

This convinced me that I didnt really enjoy working for a large organisation but also I didnt enjoy working alone as a lone consultant. I also didnt need more money but I wanted more time to do stuff that I wanted to do and if I decided for no money or for pay then it was my decision. This was very empowering as once you take money out of the equation then it is about doing the right thing rather than listening to the payer. |

i retired two years ago after a bad holiday accident left me unable to drive for a few months ,so i just sat it out for the last nine months till my pensions started .so now had a couple of years doing what i WANT to do rather than having to get home and get ready for work . camera wise i have come the other way having had a 50d plus a 400mm 5.6 and a few other lenses and the use of my sons 7d to try out ,i acquired a nikon d7000 middle of last year and was going to keep it for a spare camera ,after a while to acclimatise myself i realised that the d7000 is far superior in most respects to the canon pro-sumer range 50d,60d,7d ,nikon lenses being the problem ,i struggled for a few months with a sigma 150-500os ,but early this year changed to a nikon 300mmf4 afs and now use it with a 1.4tc and a 1.7tc finding it the ideal combo ,all my canon gear is now sold i much prefer my nikon for what i use it for . |

All the best in your retirement Iain. I have been retired for a few years and it's a very nice life style. Good luck with your Canon gear. I hope you still remain an active member here as I have learned a lot from you. Keep posting the wildlife shots as looking at the photo, I can't tell if it was a Nikon or Canon which took the shot - just a solid photographer. |

All this talk of retirement is making me rather envious! I could take my pension at any time but I want to finish my current project and that won't happen until around the middle of next year, then I need to give six months notice and... We shall see, I am not ready to vegetate yet I would like to do something two or three days a week. Enjoy your retirement. |

I wanted more time for my stuff rather than working long hours and getting paid sheaves of money but being too tired to enjoy it. So now I have 100% my own time, I enjoy the slower pace and ability to do what I want. One annoyance is I still cant control the weather!! |
