Won't be long before I'm back with the bears on Kodiak Island. I'll be using my new D4 with a 200-400mm Nikkor and a 2X Nikkor telextender this time. Hopefully the weather will be tolerant enough for some good photos (kodiakweather.com).
Maybe I'll be able to post some new shots. - EdM

Glad to see you back posting Ed.
Hope all the issues of the last year are sorted and we can see some more great bear photos.

Can't guarantee the shots. It's free-ranging wild animals, so I get what I get. The weather seems to have closed in a bit recently from looking at the internet webcam sites, but maybe I'll get a few good days. I'll be there for 10 days early next month.

Thanks. Those are fantastic images with the 7100. I only hope I can get close to that degree of sharpness and resolution. Waiting for the specs on the D400.

I've been waiting over a year for a press announcement from Nikon on the D400 but things seem to happen along the way. Maybe the D400 will be a D4 beater!

Good for you, Ed.

I put my name in the state lottery a couple of times but never got a ticket...now I don't go up there any more for work, so probably never will see them.

Can't wait to see your pix!!!

No lottery Tom. I use a guide service on Uyak Bay. Tried the lottery a number of times and only contributed my money.  Also, from talking to people that have visited the Brooks Falls operation, it's crowded and actually has air-traffic jams with the number of air taxi operators going in and out.

Thank you all for the good wishes. I've been busy getting things done around the house before leaving, so I haven't been logging in much.
Hopefully the salmon run will bring out the bears. It's been a very warm summer for Kodiak, and, like all furbearers, the bears will lie-up in cool shade locations rather than wander around during the day. The salmon run does, however, make them fish almost all day long. A downside to the unusual heat is it tends to make then short tempered and pretty intolerant of intruders, so we will have to be on our toes and be very careful.

There is a bright side emerging. The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports that the berry crop is excellent, and the pink salmon run is well above expectations. So maybe some good bear photos.

Current theme is Blue
