Anyone got an unwanted 88N screw on lens cap for sale?

Don’t think I recognise that code…what lens is it for? Presumable an old one if it’s screw fitting? Does it need to be that one? Would not a suitably sized push on cap suffice?

It is for a Nikkor C 500mm f8 reflex. There is one on Ebay but they want £50 for it! I haven't found a suitable alternative - closest is a 86mm pinch cap that may fit. Click here to comment on this image.

Yes I saw that one on eBay. Make him an offer? Can’t be many people wanting one…especially at that price. I was going to suggest an 86mm grip cap but wondered what the depth of the old thread was and if the lens cap thickness would clear the glass? presumably the 88 is the thread size? wonder if a uv filter might serve same protection purpose…even if sacrificial?

Glass is about 1/2inch down from the filter threads. There isn't an offer option on the auction, I'll have to message him .... Can't find any 88mm UV filters either - just a 2x yellow! The lens takes 39mm filters at the back of the lens.

Best thing I can suggest is this. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324686849609? At £4 it seems like a steal. Alternative is to look for a plastic push on cap (my Tamron 500mm has one like that).

For cat lenses it is recommended that you dont put filters on the front as it really degrades the image!

You could print an image of the Nikon cap on card and stick it to the filter glass

OK, it doesnt offer same impact protection as a metal or plastic cap so stick some plastic or rigid foam on the glass. Signed Heath Robinson

Update - not only did I manage to secure a mint front cap but also the original lens hood for the lens, so that is a complete 500mm lens in excellent condition for less than £100 Click here to comment on this image.

Looks like you have it attached to a FM or FE as well. Enjoy the lens.

It's an FE - another recent acquisition together with a 50mm f2 Nikkor H - for less than £50. The FE had a stuck shutter release, now fixed

Well done. If you have a good mechanical knowledge then many of these things can be fixed with a bit of time and patience.

Would this lens work with a TC 200 teleconverter or would it suffer from vignetting? I know the f number will drop to 11...
