Hola. Have just got round to sorting myself out here. Been away for a few weeks on the high seas, working on a ferry. Looking good so far. Keep up the good work, boys.

Psst...where is the red wine emoticon? o.O

Hola, Like the new avatar.
Is it the windswept look after the windy trips to the Balaerics?

The wine seems to have slipped off the shelf in the move.
Actually one thing that I have noticed that is slower here is the PMs and most of that is down to the loading of the emoticons. We might need to reduce some of them to speed up the loading of the PM function.

Why do we need ANY emoticons on PMs?

In fact there are so many on the main posting panel and several are indistinquishable from others without 'waiting for an action to happen' to give a clue.

Do we REALLY need such a diversity?

PS I cant find the 'dump bricks' emoticon I now need!!!!!!

I agree, there is NO need for emoticons in PM's.

There are too many emoticons to select from now but several which we need are missing, like the bricks, a big grin, the excellent winking devil, Judith's glass of wine, an off topic, the small thumbs up.

This was why I conducted a sort of pole on the old forum to see which emoticons to bring forward. No notice seems to have been taken of that.

http://www.nikond1.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=13559&forum=1&PHPSESSID=2cea43046a4e2e0d793892a7972995d8

Perhaps we need another pole?

The moving of the whole set was done as a matter of expediency rather than any particular must have.
In some ways I think that while the emoticons add interest they also detract from content.

Happy for a pool to happen and we reduce to a set of ?10?.
It will make the Reply and PM panels open faster. ;-)

It wasn't the whole set, that's the point.

I agree things were done in a bit of a rush, from the need to get the new forum up and running. Now we are settling in perhaps we can fine tune?

Is it possible to remove emoticons from the PM panel? They are not needed there, in my view.

Not sure 10 would be enough, although it would be a good starting point. We need to remember Christmas too...

We appear to have 62 at present, I think half that would be plenty, plus the seasonal ones.

I feel emoticons are a very important element in the on-line environment, they are a way to convey what the writer feels which is harder in words. You say yourself a picture tells a thousand words, well the emoticons may not convey a thousand words but they can convey emotion and can save misunderstandings, especially across different languages and cultures.

I know you are busy, if you tell me what to do I will gladly deal with the emoticons if it helps.

Robert if you want to get a poll of the favourite emoticons and send them to Steve or myself then I am sure we can adjust.

JK - it's not so much the windswept look as hiding the unphotogenic face look!!! :sssshh:

I was working on a ferry that went to the Balearics and Barcelona, Ed. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed off at any of the ports, except for one afternoon in Menorca which was very pretty. So, I've been to Ibiza harbour, San Antonio harbour and Palma harbour - just never set foot on the islands! Have been to Barcelona before but to be 200m from Las Ramblas and not be able to get there was frustrating! Being cooped up on a boat that is on the move 24 hours a day wasn't great either. I now understand the phrase "cabin fever"! Damn - where's my red wine icon?!! lol

We can reduce the amount of emoticons in the reply panel, but we can't eliminate them. Currently there are 44 there, the rest come up by clicking the MORE link.
How many do we reduce the ones in the Reply box to? 16? 20, 24, 28?

I should add that the emoticon upload functions is far from user friendly, in fact it is hair pulling frustration. It's easy to lose the whole lot. So if we can agree on a number to have in the Reply panel, it would be nice not to have to revisit it later.

I think we need to get some consensus about which to keep before we trim out too many, but I do think that having less on the initial page will be better for the Reply and PM panels but if we move them to the More screen they will still be available.
It will be very difficult to decide which ones as we all have our favourites!

Aren't we off topic here, I started a thread specifically to discuss this?

Just to be adversarial why do we need any. I have always tried to convey what I was writing about in words. Have never understood sign language too well. Have no idea how to use them ,have no desire to,and don't understand some of them. In my narrow world it's a waste of resources.

They can be used to convey tone, which is all too easy to lose in a pure text environment, making up for a little of the 80% of communication that is not what you say but how say it. (tone and body language)
