There is a good article here about the new Nikon sRAW format that is an option in the latest cameras. http://www.rawdigger.com/howtouse/nikon-small-raw-internals Not for me I think but I am sure some will find a use. |

Jonathan, Thanks for the hint. It does explain some questions regarding file size and processing time/use-of-buffer that seem oddd in the D4 manual. My short-form: -it barely decreases file size (comapred to 12-bis lossless) -it takes extra processing and buffer in-camera. Regards, Gilbert |

Seems like many of us are in agreement that you dont get something for nothing and that anyone who purchases an expensive 36MP camera wont be interested in the fact that you can save a few cents by switching to sRAW so you dont have to buy the next size of card up the range. Nikon really seem to have lost the plot. |

However I do believe they need a shake up so that they address the new advances in cameras and maybe incorporate them into a camera that is sold rather than just tested in--house. It is interesting to see the multiple approaches that Nikon take in their R&D. Apparently the Nikon museum in Japan has a myriad of different cameras that have been built but only tested in house before being dropped. Maybe we will see a revolutionary Nikon D5 with mirrorless technology that focuses as fast as current DSLRs or better and only weighs half as much but takes all the current lenses. That is what I want. An FX camera that uses mirrorless technology but with great AF capability that uses the current F mont lenses but it weighs less than 1kg. So a Nikon 1 V2 on steroids. |

I agree Eric. Sometimes we over engineer. The Fuji X-Trans cameras have shown (to me at least) that APS-C at 16MP is definitely better than a D3 with 12.3MP and almost but not quite as good as good as a D600 with 24MP. If Fuji launch a 24MP APS-C camera wit X-Trans sensor at Photokina 2014 then this will be a game changer. Then Nikon D810 at 36MP will be the better than a 24MP APS-C Fuji.. I know from my use of the D800 that I dont need FX at 36MP as 24MP at FX is good enough for me. This will then put me in a position where I only need to prove to myself that the Fuji has AF performance that is OK for action and wildlife photography and I will release all my Nikon kit. |
