Looks very interesting 20.8 MP seems about right, 12 fps and 4K movie. Wonder how much it will be?

Regarding the 'two versions' it seems there will in fact be one: The XQD, the option is to return the new camera to Nikon for retrofitting two CF slots in what Nikon regard as degrading the body, because it is claimed it will cause a -4 times reduction in performance compared with the XQD spec.

Have seen £5,199 and £4,400 mentioned, maybe somewhere between? o.O

I am very interested as it my solve some of the noise problems I am getting with the D810 in poor light. I will wait till the first reviews and the must have it rush is over and prices settle down.
I have not used XLD cards myself but a sports photographer friend with a D4S said they are very fast and had no failures compared to CF cards. They are also a must have if you do video with the camera.

That seems really stupid to downgrade a camera just to use cheaper CF cards.
I have never seen an XQD card but I am sure that anyone buying a D5 should be able to afford an XQD card!

The downgrade to CF is chargeable too.

So it costs you more for a hobbled product. Why do Nikon even bother to offer it? o.O

A pair of 128gb XQD cards will run about $ 900 US.:applause:

The card recommended by Nikon is the Lexar 2933x XQD 2.0 card

http://www.lexar.com/pro-2933x-xqd

A pair of 128Gb = ~ $1,200

A pair of 64Gb = ~ $658

A pair of 32Gb = ~ $356

I would have though anybody able to afford $5,200 for a body would be able to afford the investment in the cards? You don't HAVE to get two and you probably don't need 128Gb cards. Bit like buying a Ferrari but not affording the petrol...

How much is 3.2 MILLION ASA film a roll? The D5 can take 200 shots continuously at 3.2 million ISO @ 12 shots/second. That would be a lot of film?

o.O

The fastest Color film I could find quickly was 400 & 800ASA @ about £10 per 36 exposure roll. At a motorcycle race meeting or a days photography of a botanic garden, I usually take at least 1000 exposures, that would be in the region of £360 for film, on ONE day! Then would need processing @ about £10 per roll... Then you would have to either print or scan the negatives.

Looking at it from that POV the cards are pretty cheap.

Some links to info and comparison of CF, SD and XQD cards.

http://petapixel.com/2011/12/08/compactflash-cards-to-be-replaced-with-the-smaller-xqd-format/

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_memory_cards

I cant find any pinout details for the XQD cards.

I did a quick ebay search for adapters for CF to XQD and vice versa but came up with no hits.
Plenty of adapters for SD and TD or microSD to CF cards adapters. I use these in my D3, D3S and D800 as I prefer to buy SD cards.

Bit more digging shows the XQD to be 16 bit PCI Express card.
The pinouts for this are here.

So, are you saying that the old wisdom of ...the smaller the pixels, the poorer the low light quality....is still correct?

Eric the problem is there as with bird photography you are forced even with a 700mm lens to blow up a fair bit. Also fasst moving so high shutter speeds so even in good light you need at least 800 ISO and 1/1000se or faster. If as happens the light drops just as you line up a good shot camera goes to widest f no as I work on shutter priority you then find no time to reset. Result is pull back on NEF later and if you need to plus 1.5 or even 2 stops to correct noise comes! See pix! This is 25% of a D810 image pulled back +1.5 stops in post.

I think it's more involved than just pixel size, processors and software do a lot more now days.
Look at the D1, huge pixels but poor hi ISO.

I agree it is more than just the sensor (12MP v. 16MP v 21MP) and its pixel size and the support electronics (EXPEED version 3, 4, 5) as the the software also comes into play.

This is exemplified with the Fuji X series cameras all the same sensor (more or less).  Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop ACR  still cant beat the solutions offered in other RAW softwares.

I am wondering as there was a D3 (FX), D700 (FX) and D300(S) (DX), so will there be a D5 (FX), D550 or ?D850? (FX) and D500 (DX).

A D550 would be a FX 21MP FX camera with all the other features of the D500.

B&H Photo has two separated pre-order listings for the D5, one for dual XQD and another for dual CF. Both are priced at $6500 US.

I'm still using my D800 and DF and will continue to do so.

The XQD cards rated write speed are 150MB/sec compared with the fastest SD card (UHSii) or CF card Extreme Pro from Sandisk which is 100MB/sec.

Think you are a bit out there JK...

Taken from the Lexar XQD page I gave the link to above, the specs read as follows:

32GB—Up to 440MB/s read, 390MB/s write
64GB—Up to 440MB/s read, 400MB/s write
128GB—Up to 440MB/s read, 400MB/s write

I was looking at the SanDisk SD offerings versus the Sony XQD. There dont seem to be any Sandisk XQD cards.

Those Lexar ones are much faster.

Cant find a page on the Sandisk site that gives information I want on XQD.

What I'm wondering is if the camera realy needs the 150MB/sec for full preformance, 14fps 4k etc, or if the fastest SD will do the job.

The D3 managed double digit fps with 2010 cards.
o.O

I think the XQD cards are needed to make sure that it can do the 4K video effectively. Purely a guess I know little or nothing about video.
