My D3 has gone from focusing in all three modes to just focusing in single point. It has done it one at a time first auto area went off then dynamic went off now single is hit and miss. I have tried cleaning the focus module but it's made no difference. Is it the end for my D3?

All lenses? Are the lens to body contacts good ? How good is the battery? Are they AFS lenses?

I've done the factory reset but not the firmware. I'll give that a try.

You can only load the next latest firmware. It is not possible to reload an already loaded firmware unless you are Nikon Technical!

OK, so firmware reinstalled, two out of three are working, auto area is working intermittently but I can live with that as I never use it anyway.

That is good news Iain. Might be good to get a NPS service next time there is a Nikon Day somewhere close to you. It is free as can help you keep the camera in top condition. Need to register for NPS.
