I'm frustrated that Nikon has not made (and shows no sign of making) anything like the fantastic Canon MP-E 65 macro lens. Almost to the extent of buying a Canon body just for this. And then the Nikon just turn around and give you results that blow your mind. These are from an early evening 10 minutes close to my house in an attempt to let the days stress relieve itself.    All D4 with 24-70. As soon as i saw these on screen I felt at one with the world (but I still want an MP-E 65!) Ed |

Ed- It's a fools game to try to match canon and nikon. Just as one gets an edge on the other, the whole scene is reversed. Nikon was the really big winner with the D1 - a full three years of monopoly. Then as canon got in the game, they creamed nikon with more great lenses. Then nikon came roaring back and probably has the edge now, especially if you consider the "tank" effect of indestructibility and the far far superior backwards compatibility. Truth of the matter is that they are both great and once you learn one system and get all the little accessories, there is not much reason to always look over your shoulder at the other. Everyone in this forum was moaning and groaning that nikon would never make a FF body - now canon fans are crying for something to compete with the D800 - it never ends  and that is good for US ! |

Has that duck got a touch of red eye Jeff? BTW, Many years ago I listened to an interview with Patrick Lichfield about portrait photography on a radio 'phone in'. One caller asked about how to cure red eye, Patrick suggested a special pen to touch up the eyes. The caller was horrified "Wouldn't that be painful for the sitter?" asked the caller... Wonderful photographs Ed, when you chuck that old D4 away let me know! |

yep eric got it right its a slavonian grebe ,there are only a few hundred in the whole u.k mostly in the very far north of scotland .my lad got one a few years ago locally ,but this is the first time i have ever seen one .and on a huge lake hard to spot as there very very small.to get it on float past at around 20 feet or so was the real triumph of the day ,the winter sun was the icing on the cake p.s the eye is that colour its not photoshopped another one url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/31671466@N07/8444409709/]  [/url]state sail past (EXPLORED) by black fox wildlife photography, on Flickr |

Only pulling leg Jeff, excellent photographs and well done capturing a rare visitor. Being in the right place at the right time is key, I am surrounded by wildlife possibilities here but my real passion is not wildlife. I really enjoy the occasional sortie into the wild but don't have the passion to sustain it regularly. I have great respect for those who do. Well done for being in the right place at the right time, and realising what you are looking at isn't a Duck. |

Ed, regarding the Canon lens. It is a macro that provides a large amount of extension as though there was a bellows attached. This allows it to provide 1:1 to x5 mag. Ideal for insects and the like. If you use the Nikon 60 or 105 or Sigma 150/180 you get 1:1 or better as well but I guess you want the ultra close up with no extra carry of extension tubes or bellows. |

Give Dr. Klause D Schmitt a call, I am sure he will be able to source something or will know where you can get one. I can PM you his eMail if you like Ed. With an adaptor on a Nikon mount you won't be able to get infinity but I doubt that will be a problem. It will also give you greater that 1:5 magnification... |

NOT the one with glass in!!! Or smash it out, it's low quality stuff to correct for infinity, rubbish. In this case Infinity not needed. The other one looks OK. I suppose I have shot myself in the foot here, if Ed does get one and the Canon MP-E 65 lens, he won't be tossing the D4 in the garbage.  |

Thanks guys. Sorry for the silence .. I'm on my way to the airport. Sorry to disappoint Robert, although he didn't shoot himself in the foot. Thise Canon-Nikon adaptors are not very good .. at least the ones with glass in are really C**p. The best solution I have found is an achromatic 3x on my sigma 150. The 10x are horrible, but the 3x is OK. The Canon 500D has a role to play as well. Ed |
