This is the latest rumour on NikonRumors
http://nikonrumors.com/2013/02/18/nikon-to-announce-a-high-end-compact-camera-16mp-dx-sensor-28mm-f2-8-lens-expeed-2-processor.aspx/

Looks like Nikon may be aboutto produce a Fuji X100-like camera.
in the old days Fuji bought Nikon bodies and labelled them Fuji...... Now Nikon copy Fuji..... How the worm doth turn!

Perhaps Nikon are following the principle of while the first bird may catch the worm, the second mouse gets the cheese.

I don't think it's a camera I would need.

The Sony 70-400 f4-5.6 lens is what Nikon needs to do to its current 80-400 lens that needs and upgrade on the AF from AFD to AFS and also on the VR to the latest version of VR (VRii).

This old Nikon lens is badly in need of an upgrade. Ideally I'd like to see a Nikon 80-400 f4.0 AFS VRii but this would make the lens much heavier.

I find that very interesting as the Nikon 80-400 costs a heap of money (~£1200) compared to the equivalent lenses from Tokina and Sigma.
I have the Sigma version which was half the price of the Nikon lens and from my tests with the equivalent Nikon lens the Sigma is superior.
I know that there is meant to very large variations in the quality of the Nikon version. I know that Ed Matusik has one and his version seems to be very good or as good as my Sigma.

If Nikon upgrade the 80-400 f4.5-5.6 AF-D VR lens to VRii and AFS then I may be tempted to exchange my Sigma but in reality I dont need to as I have a very nice unit in the Sigma and if I need better quality then I use my Nikon 400mm f2.8 AFS which is absolutely brilliant.

heres one from yesterday ,jonathon .taking into account that this is a pre-digital lens model ,a/f is faster than the nikon ,it seems more than reasonably sharp with f9 be best ,.the cost came in a £270 with a years dealer warranty .

yes i would have loved to get the up to date one but it can wait till finances improve ,but its certainly got her out to 400mm at a modest price with good performance .as i said i have tried the nikon 80-400vr and wasn't impressed at all
