Yes it looks like a fine entry level camera that does a whole heap more. Maybe the wait for the D400 will be worthwhile if they manage to keep the cost reasonable and have 24MP |

I wonder how it will perform against the D7000 in terms of IQ? I have alaways shied away from the smaller camera bodies but having worked with the X100 for a while I have become accustomed to holding the smaller camera differently. So the D7000 isnt the pain it first was. I wonder if (when compared to the X100) even the D3200 might be a lightweight walkaround option. It all boils down to image quality. |

I think the problem with using say a D3 and also a 'lesser' camera is that you always want some of the features of the better camera to be present on the lesser one. For example on the D300 an D700 I really miss the ability to loch shutter and aperture when in Manual shooting mode. |

Well I was thinking more of having nothing more than D3 IQ and noise control in a 'near pocket size' body for walking around, down the shops, family holidays. Under those situations the need for the special features or indeed the inclination to use them becomes subordinate. As photographers we should be able to take any camera given a degree of manual control,a good lens....povided the sensor and cameras basic functions are good enough. What the X100 has taught me is that, despite being a great camera with excellent IQ, it can complicate shooting (due to its quirks and difference to a familiar Nikon body) to the point where the process of taking the picture intrudes into your creativity. A small nikon body might be better? |

But this would indicate that Nikon are going to 24mp from base line up so I would expect the D400 to be at least that. |

The D3200 is getting good reviews in UK magazines but in a 4 camera review (Practical Photography July 2012)with Canon EOS 550D, Sigma SD15 the Nikon 3200 was very highly rated but came 2nd to the Sony 57! It was given the all important 1st place in terms of IQ. Update with D800 it is doing all I want and am still well pleased with it and have no regrets with parting with my D3X. I think it I would not even consider a D400 if and when it comes out as the D800 is all I need now. |

Most photographers have an in built bias, and on top of that are publishing concerns relating to circulation, and advertising revenue. Makes for a difficult environment for true objectivity. |

I would't make a buying decision on that information but no doubt many will? To me the brand selection is about the whole brand experience, the feel of the cameras, the layout of controls and menus, the quality of aftercare and the availability of lenses which suit my needs. Those are the sort of considerations I make before buying into a brand. Once I have committed to a brand I select the model which suits my needs and my pocket. On the IQ front while there must be some variations I don't think there are bad choices especially in the upper end of the market. It's more a matter of finding a tool which suits your needs. |

Graham I do wish you hadn't said that. I have a strong emotional attachment to my D3X, but it is getting very close to being declared surplus to requirements. I can carry the D800/800E for longer with the option for DX cropping plus the D4 if I need to push things. Actually, in real world work for me (macro mainly) the D4 is a real game-changer. The Nikkor 200 is usable without a tripod. Hope you guys are all above the water level. Ed |

So as Graham said the D3X is surpassed by the D800! This round of camera upgrades has really changed the landscape. With my D800 I do feel that I dont need any more pixels or size of sensor. I guess there will be a D4X that comes later this year or early next year that will have the D800 sensor and improved electronics. |

Nikon need to get the D400 or whatever it will be called out ASAP as a lot of people I am talking to are getting fed up of waiting. |

I'd agree especially with the Olympics two weeks away. I was expecting that it would have been released and in shops last month to get the 2/3/4th body sales from pros who are covering the Olympics. |
