I've been using Lightroom Classic CC for a while now and generally get on OK with the noise reduction sliders in the Detail section of the Develop Module. Occasionally will I use the brush tool and masks to work in a specific part of the image rather than the global tool. However, sometimes I find myself fiddling with the Detail & Contrast sliders and totally confusing myself! Hence I'm on the look out for some 'top tips' or a good online guide (my searches often lead to assorts of advice from the very basic to by this or that plugin). Oh! and I prefer to work in Lr only even though I Ps too. Thanks... |

Hi Steve, Lightroom is intended as the first stop in image processing, PS is a great tool which I resort to occasionally for heavy lifting or something out of the ordinary. I take it you have an up to date version of Lightroom Classic CC, I regularly hit the 'auto' button after I have roughly cropped and checked white balance. I find auto adjustments give me a good starting point. I adjust the clarity and de-haze controls, rarely more than 26 on clarity and maybe 3? on de-haze. Noise and sharpening are the last operations. For a special image or one with particular noise issues, I take the image into NIK filters, the Dfine2 filter is very good both for regular noise and banding. There are a lot of adjustment options and the very handy before/after swipe This is an image I took with a D800 it was so dark you couldn't see the slates on the roof, nor even the TV aerials. The red line delineates the before/after image. This was just taking the image into Dfine 2, I didn't adjust anything, I would expect it would be possible to improve on the default settings. Thanks Robert. Yes, I use the latest Lr Classic C. Interesting your usual max on Clarity and Dehaze; I tend to venture up to the mid-teens on one or other, or both depending on the image. Noise and sharpening are the last operations. I had a try with the NIK filters a little while back but they proved unstable. Think it was around the time when Google bought or sold them and development was lagging behind current operating systems. Thus I had what was perhaps an unfortunately bad experience. The improvement in your sample images is impressive so maybe time for me to take another look. Cheers... |
