Yes read this earlier today.
If they were to release a new D400 they would have a huge seller.

Be interested to see what the restructuring looks like. I guess ot will just be a financial model readjustment.

The biggest issue is they are not producing the cameras people are wanting but its not just Nikon, Canon is doing the same.

Although a lot of people want a D400 I don't think it'll turn the tide for them. They need an answer to the new Fuji's, OMD's and Sonys and they don't seem to have it.

A Nikon version of an XT1, with the quality small lenses available that Fuji have but also backwards compatible for the old lens range - that would have an impact.

V1/V2 etc aren't good enough to compete.

I agree Rich.

If they could do an XT1 equivalent at 24MP APS-C then I would be tempted to go that route.
I dont want a DSLR with mirror I want a lighter smaller camera with fast AF. Nikon can definitely do that as they have all the technology from the DSLRs.
The V1, V2, V3 all focus pretty fast but the size of sensor is just not up to daily use where you want (high) quality output.

I am finding the Sony RX10 with it's Zeiss f2.8 24-200 (35mm eq) lens does all I would want to do with the Nikon D400 they have not produced, so have lost the boat with me.

That is the crux of the problem with Nikon not advancing a certain model that a user identifies as best for them they ultimately run the risk of losing that customer.

I bought the Fuji X100 then the XPro1, then the XE1 and now the XT1. This has cost me more than buying a D400 but it has shown me that I can get great quality from a smaller, lighter camera even with a restricted lens a**enal.
I have just bought a Samyang 8mm f2.8 in Fuji X mount to give me super wide that the Fuji 14mm doesnt provide.
My total Fuji kit fits in a LowePro Mini Trekker whilst my Nikon equivalent doesnt fit in two LowePro Trekker Aw backpacks which are twice the size of the Mini Trekker.

Like you I will think very hard before buying a D400, in fact I'm more likely to buy a D5300 first!

I also have noticed that people do not seem to take offense when someone pulls out a phone and openly takes pictures with it , where as some shy frome Slr`s , we celebrated my daughter`s birthday recently , upon request I left the Slr at home ( let`s keep it informal Pa ..?!! ),.. at the restaurant she happily snapped away with her Iphone , and No-one noticed , but then some one pulled out a P&S and some people shy`ed away .. could that be an indication of things to come ? ...
and perhaps Nikon has got something in the works to meet with new demands , I certainly hope so .

I think you make a very valid point.

Non professional photography is changing, rapidly.

Not just in how we TAKE photos but how we USE them.

Pros will still make quality images for publications, displays, advertising etc etc.

But the 'mass market' which means everyone else, are increasingly only using images on social network sites.

People click on phones and immediately the image is global. The issue of absolute quality, perfect framing and exposure are secondary to immediacy. Look at TV news ...how 'amateur footage' is used increasingly without consideration of its quality.

There was an old UK TV sitcom about the workers in a cheap clothing factory called 'Never mind the quality, feel the width'. Whilst modern cameras have increasingly higher image quality and capability, the NEED for this precision is sadly disappearing....faster than we might think.
