I think if I remember that this is the same type of glass that Canon used in the 400mm f4 DO lens and there were a lot of complaints over odd things like your experencing with the 300mm. I am even shooting jpeg at the moment while I find my feet.

Super shot but sunlight is rough on black birds and shadow detail could be sorted in Photoshop to show a bit more. I think you get best quality for bird pix in overcast weather ie cloudy bright. Look at Eric's shot of the Sedge Warbler spot on lighting giving good detail.
