4.00 pm yesterday I was on my afternoon walk without a camera and last light on Titchfield Abbey looked good only had my quite new IPhone SE not taken a pix with it so far results rather impressive, setting odd?: 1/700sec f1.8 ISO20 lens perhaps 28mm.

Dare I tell you the previous day I was there with my new Sony A7iii and the very good Sony 24-105mm standard lens. I have also just traded in my D500 DX lenses and yes 80-400mm old friend AF_S for the amazing new Sony 200-600mm Lens. Results so far are very good ISO even up to ISO 5000 still good.
No way do I plan to sell my D850 and FX lenses but early tests show the big Sony zoom is well up to the Nikon 500 PF AF-S more later conditions at present not too good for photography.

Great Image Quality , specially of the phone .

Perhaps I am just being Stubborn, holding on to my SlrN and D1 / 3 camera`s ,altho` fer X-mas did I get a 70-200 f4.0 N VR lens,..that image-quality of that Sony is Exellent...I think that Nikon Needs to fight back and make camera´s that can share files to the media as snappy as the phone can, without it costing an arm and a legg ..some time back  I was in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, taking a pic. of the Petrona towers with my D3s , which could Not get the color-balance right, yet a battered old iphone 4 had No problems with it...the Quality and Robustness off Nikon is Legendary , but is it enough ??...as it is , I think that Nikon needs to Improve on their Electronic department , and Soon !!

Really......
Should be a fantastic camera.
With current bank interest rates you might as well enjoy the money as put it in the bank!

😈😈😈😈

I suspect if you look in your camera cupboard, you would be surprised how many Alpha 1s you could buy, with spare equipment.

Sadly if I sold all my Nikon gear it wouldn't clear my credit card bill:needsahug:

It's a lovely image from any equipment, Graham.

I guess the current range of mobile phones have cameras that excel by virtue of their sensor size and lens focal length. They enable incredible depth of field even for wide apertures....with the advantage of low iso as a result.

The settings for that shot make me wonder about the need to use large sensors and bigger lenses for this type of photography?

4mm lens, 1/1066s @ f1.8 ....and iso 20!!

I guess it depends if you want a large print out of it.

I havent seen a camera phone that gives A4 print of acceptable quality much less A1, A0.
I dont have an iPhone12 but my iPhone 7+ doesnt produce A4 prints that I find acceptable.

I think Graham is going to attempt a 16x12 print. ;-)

The wife has an iPhone 11 Pro. (I still have just a phone ) She read that the 11 was a major leap forward on camera quality compared to previous models....so bought one and sold her Panasonic FZ2000. She had problems with her hands and was finding holding even the bridge camera too much.

The iQ of the 11 is quite superb but I think the wide angle lens (it has 3) is a little distorted (barrelling). The other 2 lenses are fine.

I think we are getting to a point where we must question whether printing large prints is the natural end product of our hobby.

Graham still exhibits his work so is a more regular printer. I personally haven't printed anything for 5 years....when my A3+ printer packed up.
I never replaced it, believing the local print shop could fill that gap. I've also used the online printers that Graham recommended for digital photographic printing....they were excellent, cheap, fast and frankly did a better job than me. 😆

I am similar to you as I havent made a large print for a number of years.  However I have a need to make some large prints but I want some more Cornish photos.  The Covid situation has put my schedule back by 18 months.

Graham, I dont know if this would interest you.  Seems like a nice adapter so you can use the Nikon lenses on the Sony.  Only chipped lenses I think if you want EXIF. And only manual focus.

https://www.dpreview.com/news/7771020004/monsteradapter-new-la-fe1-adds-af-support-to-nikon--lenses-on-select-sony-cameras

as it offers AF functionality of Nikon AFS, AFI and AFP lenses on Sony camera models:
a7 II (firmware version 2.0 or higher), a7 III
a7R II, a7R III, a7R IV
a7S III
a7C
a9, a9 II
a6100, a6300, a6400, a6500, a6600

JK Thanks for the info but sadly after never been with out a Nikon since 1965 I have now sold all the lenses and date I say the wonderful D850 and have on order the all-new Sony A1. Handed in the Nikon kit to London Camera Exchange in Southampton and placed the order so I will be only Sony in future. I think this new Sony market will kill a lot of business for Canon and Nikon. This pix was first studio use on the A7iii with Sony 70-200mm F4 lens and Elinchrom Studio Flash.

Good shot of the sparrow hawk Graham.
Are you finding the AF significantly better than the D850.

I cannot post anything on the bird thread ...so I will stick these one here.....

We've got one of those nut feeders that has spring loaded perches, so that heavy birds drop the perch closing the aperture to the nuts.

This guy/gal? has started flying AT the peanut feeder.

The impact shakes out peanuts. They then fly down and pick up their trophies before the blackbirds (who have also adopted the technique but aren't big enough to dislodge that easy) swoop in and steal the spillage. Must get a video before a I run out of nuts.

A7riii in Sony speak! Not R, that has 42mp. The iii is only 24mp. The only reason for the R is the cropability but it's noise handling isn't as good as the iii.
The new A1 is believed to correct this high mp sensor noise, along with other mirrorless limitations like screen blackout.
