What is the general opinion on the new 300 f4 vr.

$1999 ==> £1999
Gulp!,,,
I will stick with my 300mm f2.8 AFS.
I dont think VR is that useful on telephoto.

It's only useful on any lens handheld at slow shutter speeds.

Exactly and with a long lens and slow shutter speeds in low light there is a loss of quality.
The other thing is that while it is well documented that VR should be switched off for tripod use. The fact you should also disable it for shutter speeds faster than 1/500 is NOT!

Not as bad as you thought JK £1639, still don't think its worth over two times the price of a good secondhand 300 f4 non vr.

I've only got one lens with stabilisation on it and thats on the Fuji.

If I was still Nikon it would have to be something special to make me part with the money.

Looked at the Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens sample images

Read more on NikonRumors.com: http://nikonrumors.com/2015/01/06/nikkor-300mm-f4e-pf-ed-vr-lens-sample-images.aspx/#ixzz3OMAYrUhv

Wasn't that impressed with them, even with the full sized downloads from Asia.

Would suggest holding off on this one until some indepth reviews are posted.

Nikon's Phase Fresnel (PF) lens is an interesting development but reducing chromatic aberration may have caused other problems such as resolution loss.

Thanks for that....just been asked about this lens by a birdwatching friend and I had to say I didn't know much about it. Will pass on this info.

The more I think about VR the less I am impressed.

My thoughts......
VR is not worthwhile on wideangle lenses. Yes/No. OK so you agree with me. It is only worthwhile-ish on telephoto lenses.
So you want to use it to help get rid of camera shake while using your telephoto lenses?

1. Why not increase ISO. Oh OK so your ISO is as high as you can usefully use whatever that limitation is OK.

2. So you cant increase ISO, so why not use a tripod? OK you dont have or like using a tripod. That is fair and reasonable so you want to use your camera hand held and you cant increase ISO.   Oh you have a tripod in the car.  Go get it but dont forget that if you use the tripod you need to switch off the VR.

3. What shutter speed are you needing to use. 1/4sec, f2.8 at ISO 3200 as you are taking pictures of animals or birds on a dark day or close to evening. Hmmm. I think you need to go home and get your tripod. You cannot hand hold with 1/4 using a 70-200mm or 300mm f2.8 with VR and expect shake free results.

4. OK but the light is improving and it says 1/60 at f2.8 at ISO 3200. Now you might be able to use your 70-200mm or 300mm f2.8 with VR and expect some shake free results. Notice the some word not used the many word!!!

5. The sun comes out and it is a bright sunny day. Did you know that at 1/500 there starts to be degradation of the IQ due to the VR so it is recommended that you switch off the VR in bright sunny conditions!

6. But I spent lots of money on getting VR on my lens. So you did. But why? Well they said it would give me 3 or 4 stops of advantage in dull light. Now you tell me I cant handhold a telephoto at 1/60 with VR and I should switch off VR at 1/500 or above. Yes. So VR is only useful at 1/60, 1/125 and 1/250. Well probably.
But I think if I use my monopod or brace myself against a tree or wall I dont need it at these shutter speeds. Yes, that works. So if there are no walls, trees and you dont have a monopod it may be necessary. Yes.

I think I will skip VR lenses unless there are other factors such as AFS that I want. Seems very reasonable to me.

Unless you intend to have blurred movement, shooting moving subjects at slow shutter speeds is pointless with or without VR. The subject dictates the shutter speed. That said, its a question of what options you have to 'freeze the action'...and where any compromise can be made.

For many mobile wildlife subjects, shutterspeeds of 1/500 are often order of the day. If the right exposure and composition cannot be obtained using fstop and ISO, then a tripod or VR won't help.
When lighting is outside the reach of fstop and ISO .....go back to the car...and drive to the pub.

VR is more about wobbly photographers, who don't have a tripod and who aren't able or prepared to stretch the fstop/ISO envelope. But having said that, using high ISO under incandescent lighting is far worse than daylight. So when it comes to interior low light shots, I would lean towards VR over high ISO.

Some of the latest DSLR bodies have VR built in.

I think that would kill their VR lens offerings but be very popular with users.  I think there are design considerations that make it good to have in lens versus in body.  I cant remember what it is but I remember reading about it and thinking ' fair enough! '.

Some of the in camera VR systems move the sensor to sync with the vibration.
Allows those super zoom fixed lens cameras to get sharp pix at 1200mm eq or more.
