Probably the same sample surfaced during the election of the last Pope in Rome (try getting a fair close up from the crowd in Saint Peters square..)
Nikon has not built anything like it since.
The spectacular 2000mm mirror lens is even older.

I have used the 500mm f8 (fixed on f8!) Mirror lens many yrs ago! In those days I did not take 35mm film cameras very seriously as I needed high quality colour in African game reserve for tourist brochures. It was interesting to use but not nearly as sharp as my (also f8) 500mm Hasselblad lens.

Picture shows me at work at same time in a Rhodesian game reserve. Camera is a Linhof 6x7 range finder camera with roll film back.

I use a very small and sharp (for a mirror lens) Tamron 500mm when I want a little extra range with a light lens. The 1000mm I have weighs very heavy and really needs to be on a tripod.

The lens is mounted to what appears to be a Canon DSLR. Is that because Reuters is mainly a Canon user?

The 500mm I was talking about was not too heavy and on the F2 Nikon well balanced. At that time a had a 200-600mm early Nikon zoom and it way much sharper than the mirror 500mm. As stated in those days for type of work I was doing 35mm film was just not good enough. Kodachrome was OK on up to 1/2 page A4 but at 10 ISO and even later at 25 ISO too slow for long lens work in a game reserve. Printers in the 60s & 70s did not like 35mm trasp, but I must say National Geographic did well with it then!

No worries.
I could work out what you were doing so I deleted the post without the picture as I gussed that is what you wanted.

Mirror lenses tend to be softer in contrast and sharpness but sometimes they make nice images.
