1^st Post

as some of you know i use a d7000 plus 300mm f4 and t.c's for my wildlife photography very happy with this combo .but i have just acquired a D200 as well for a back up and the wife to use on occasions ,at the moment i have bolted my 18-200vr to it but is obviously lacking in range for wildlife .
there are several options out there ,i.e nikon/sigma/tamron 70-300 lenses lots around at pensioners prices s/h but the one that i keep returning to and which just slides into my pension budget is the old nikkor 75-300 metal and glass push-pull lens .
so the questions are will it work o.k on a D200
i have heard its slow to focus but extremely sharp is slow focus that bad on a digital camera .
sensible answers please funds are limited so going more expensive would be nice but a pipe dream at the moment .would you go for this or one of the g type lenses nikon/sigma/tamron

I don't know this lens, but I do know the D200.

I believe that anything ever made by Nikon that will auto-focus will work on a D200. Although I have never used the feature the D200 also let's you program in settings for none CPU lenses which gives it more capability in this area than some of the lower price based models.

In it's day the D200 was groundbreaking - Nikon's first 'Pro-sumer' model. (the D100 was never that good and obsolete almost immediately when Nikon released the D70).

Robert has a lot of experience in using the D200 with older lenses and will probably chip in with some good advice here.

I ONLY have older lenses LOL!

The D200 is a dream for the non CPU lenses, you can dial in the lens characteristics and good to go.

That said it would be better to fit a CPU chip if possible, because then it set's the camera up by simply mounting the lens, you don't have to remember to set it. My most used lens is probably my 55mm f2.8 Micro which is MF and not chipped.

I'm sorry, I have been busy last few days, I did glance at this thread but took it to be referring to the newer longer zooms. I have no experience of this lens.

I would suggest going for an f4 300mm which is stunning sharp and a stop faster, without the colour fringing (CA) issues.

I also think there are too many compromises with such a large zoom range. especially at the long end.

Good after morning!!!:hi:

i use a d200 and a 70-300vr for my aircraft pics, i also have a 70-210 3.5-5.6 af d and a 35-70 3.3- 5.6 and they all work very well, if you can find a 70-210d in good shape it is a good lens sharp and fast to focus, it is heavy (read made of real stuff) and a push pull zoom if you can get around that it is a great lens i got mine on flebay for under 150.00 us and it is in 10+ shape.

thanks for the replies so far guys ,as i said i already have a 300 f4 just need a CHEAP knock about lens for the wife to use .i really wanted info on the older (80's) 75-300 push-pull lens with the integral tripod mount and its suitability with a d200 and d7000 .

some usefull comments so far keep them coming the nikon knowledge on here is unsurpassed .

The D200 is capable with both the MF and AF lenses, and that 75-300 should work just fine, albeit a bit slowly on the D200. Keep the ISO below 800, and the D200 will deliver very nice images with that lens.

update on this,on monday i bit the bullet after a week of pulling my hair out reading test reports ,viewing pictures from various lenses (thank god for flickers search engine) and camera combo's ,and decided that for quality for pounds spent it really had to be the old 75-300 .i had been watching one on e/bay for a week and asked the owner if she would accept a offer which she did of £100 .
the lens arrived this morning and i have given it a very good shake down on the d200 and the d7000 ,any doubts about slow focus were very quickly dispelled i am finding it extremely quick to lock on ,it seems sharp at most apetures to which is a bonus ,and has completely changed my point of view on the older nikon lenses .
having run into problems in the past with old canon lenses being total dogs this is so refreshing to use ,i,m now starting to look at the 80-200 ed f2.8's with fresh eyes to .hmmmmmmm

I suspect you may find the 75-300 is a bit slow if you try to shoot sports, especially if it focuses past a player to infinity and has to come back.

The 80-200 in any guise is a wonderful lens, OK the 'AFS' is nice but I have the trombone version and the images it can provide are top of the tree, again the focus speed does cause issues for sports but allowances can be made.

i,ll be using it for wildlife and birds (or the wife will ) and already tried it on them ,fine on birds in flight and definitely fine on perched birds ,this is the thing robert you really have to know what the lens /camera in question is going to be used for i suppose .it will get a good airing in a month when we are at bempton cliffs for the gannets and puffins ,so heres hoping

I am looking forward to the end of the month when I will be taking a trip to North Wales, Conwy, Bodnant and Ness gardens, on the Wirral.

Hoping to try out my video stills.

Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8 will be my main lens.

I saw a Micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8 MF today in Lancaster in a local friendly camera store, £250? in very good condition, good price I think.

I also say to my horror a very clean D200 in Wilkinsons for £270. Good job I didn't have £250 in my pocket, else the D200 would have been coming home with me.

Yes, not exactly sure of our plans but Bodnant and Conwy during the last week in May, probably Ness one day too, I visit Ness regularly. Have a friend at Queensferry, also did a lot of work there about three or four years ago.

Will be online and staying at Prestatyn in a caravan by the sea.

Perhaps we can meet up?

yep i can't see a problem with that robert ,if your at the haven site there have been a pair of short eared owls hunting the dunes recently also the kestrel is always active .
also the stoats at conway rspb are starting to show

the new burton mere wetlands is definitely on the up and up as well .i,m only about 12 miles from prestatyn so just send me a p.m
