Has anyone used the new 80-400 who also owned or used the non-AF-S version? After lugging the 200-400 around for 10 days I'm wondering if I should sell my old 80-400 version and replace it with the new lens.

I saw a DxO test result which indicated that while it is now AFS and faster to focus but the optics are little better.
I'd stick with your older version as it seems to be a good example and better than many of the same lens model.

Just a thought. The focus issue was addressed with the newer lens, but the f-stop similarity and any other new issues make it less attractive. The 200-400mm with the TC III is a real bombshell. Guess it's back to the gym for a year or so to make the weight problem more tolerable. - EdM
P.S., I do have some new photos of bears, bald eagles, and sea otters that I'll eventually post. Overall though, there were more no-shows as Kodiak's summer weather was a bit unusual this past year.

I've been thinking about this for some time and have seen lots of good reports so took delivery of one today as they have a Christmas offer of £175.00 off and I was also able to trade in 2 older lenses.
1st results look very good light poor today but this is 400mm hand held VR on 800ISO at 1/250sec f6.3.Attachment: Nikon400mm.jpg (Downloaded 85 times)

This is from same viewpoint at 80mm also with similar settings. Focus on car hub.
The lens is a good compact size auto focus fast and spot on at all ranges. I am very impressed! Look forward to working with it in better light and stopped down a bit it can only get better.Attachment: Nikon80mm.jpg (Downloaded 85 times)

I have got to say that my Sigma 80-400 f4.5-5.6 OIS (VR) still works for me but these days I tend to prefer either my Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 AFS VR or the Nikon 400m f2.8 AFS.
When Fuji release the 140-400mm zoom for their X series cameras then I will probably get that and release the Nikon 300 and 400 lenses plus the Sigma 80-400.

I must say the Nikon 70-300 AF-S VR (it was one of the trade-ins) is a very good lens and has served me well for a good few years but this newer lens has the edge in terms of wide open sharpness. Also as far as I can see no distortion or colour fringing. It is larger and quite heavy but with the D810 well balanced.
I have now done more tests indoors with flash at f11 it is very sharp at 80 through to 400mm.

Any problems with diffraction at f11?

Images at f11 looked pin sharp at both ends of zoom, shot indoors with flash as too dull outside to do long shots.

I'm also wating for milder sunny weather to do more tests on the Tamron 150-600. It's sunny today but -15C;~)

Look forward to seeing some results from this lens. Please test the lens wide open as this is how it would be used frequently.

This is the first time used in anger and a very poor quality with the new lens. It is the freight ship that had to be grounded on a sand bank as it developed a very serious list on departure from Southampton. Its all over the news tonight. They think the cargo of very expensive cars may have slipped or perhaps the ships balancing tanks we faulty?
It was taken at last light this evening and even at pushed ISO the and 400mm. The ship was a long way from me so this is a very small image cropped!Sorry best I could do so when weather gets brighter I will shoot some good quality images for you.Attachment: Ship186.jpg (Downloaded 63 times)

Bit of sun today this is at 200mm 1/1000 f6.3 out of my window. Depth of field fall off on left side. Similar shot at 400mm much same quality. With VR one should be able to work at f11 and still get sharp pix but with better depth of field. Attachment: Test-200mm.jpg (Downloaded 47 times)

Those shots look nice and sharp.
Is that the ship that refloated itself at high tide?
|
jk
|
Yes the ship has been refloated and moved to a new place where it is being inspected for damage to hulland cargo.

Graham Whistler
|
Yes it has been re-floated but much work to do!

Tonight on news it is OK but has been blown 100 yards dragging it's moorings in the very strong wind and rough seas of last 24 hr.

Squirrel in garden this morning had a go from bedroom window with the new lens on D810 at 400mm VR on 800ISO 1/160sec at f8, hand held. It was quite small in frame and zoomed image in Photoshop to 50% and cropped to this pix. Attachment: Squirrel.jpg (Downloaded 63 times)

Very good zones of sharpness in that last image.
See the left side wall OOF, then the buttress to the window super sharp!

That bird is very sharp. What sort of subject distance?

Nice pics Graham. Lens performs well. I know the old version was knocked by many but I found mine OK. With that lens and the 810 who need a D400.

No doubt the 400mm is not quite long enough for birds but the D810 means you can crop images a lot and still retain some quality. Also all Nikon DSLRs in recent times produce good high ISO results that also helps.

Not sure even my 500mm prime would be enough for birds...but would, like to try it with and 810 to see how it crops.
