I have noticed that if light is refracted and displays colours to the human eye it is not captured by the camera - any ideas why not? Eg - we went to see Evita at the Palladium in August and Eva's 2nd act dress was covered in sparklers - it really was stunning with every colour of the rainbow in the white spotlights but it looks this this in photos -  Click here to comment on this image. |

I guess it must be due to the sensor photosites either not being small enough to capture the colour or the demosaicing not translating accurately enough the information captured by the sensor. |

OK - I have a theory - maybe the high number of different coloured points at high brightness is overwhelming the photosites and thus the camera sees the points as white. If this is so then the exposure needs to be reduced dramatically - but that will lose the background - even using HDR I think the only way to capture it is to bracket exposures. Sadly I won't be able to experiment - tickets to Evita are now nearly £400 for the last week of the run! |

I think it’s the difference between the way our eyes register “flashing lights” compared to sensors. The sensor just records overall light and colour at a certain intensity range. If the sparkle is outside that range it will just burn out that highlight. It doesn’t matter if that’s a blue, red or yellow flash…if it’s too much it will burn out to pure white. It’s analogous to overexposed sky. Doesn’t matter if it’s a blue sky, orange tinged cloud or white cloud. If they are grossly overexposed, while trying to get the rest of the image correctly exposed, they are all going to be white. Surely the only way you would record these colour flashes is if the exposure was low enough to capture the individual colour “peaks” within register…ie not climbing the right hand wall on the histogram??? I’ve never looked…..does the same happen with video?? |

It's worse with video - Evita curtain call Even the sparkles are smoothed out - might just as well be a plain white dress til she stops moving! |
