Does anyone use them?

If so, what make? Are any of the aftermarket units any good?

Chris,
re: does
Yes, I use an older aftermarket unit (MicNova) to get GPS directly info my NEF files.
In general any cable that connects the unit to the camera is a hassle, regardless of the brand.
Some more modern units attach to the 10-pin port directly, I have seen one and it seemed equally vulnerable.

Thanks - yes that is one of the ones I was considering - why they can't make the cable the right length and even shaped to minimise snagging, I really don't know!

Yes almost all the time especially when I am traveling.

I have two units.
An older GeoPic II which only has 10 pin cable.
Micnova that works on all my cameras as it has a detachable cable that I can change between the Nikon 10 pin or other custom interfaces.
Dont know if it will work with the D90 that you have but it should as these are standard interfaces.

Micnova would work on your D90.

Chris,
re: cable the right length
The snag is: different cameras may have a different optimum-length for the cable.
A note (I agree with JK):
When buying take care you get a unit with both cables (10 pin and mini-USB) so you can connect it to all Nikon DSLR's.

Yes - was looking at that one - but see what I mean about the earlier cable at camera end - straight out instead of 90 deg. Is the genuine Nikon cable better?

There is no right angle plug for the body in the new connector style.

This is a popular option, it allows total* control of most Nikon cameras.

https://www.foolography.com/shop/product/unleashed/

It uses the GPS info from your smart phone.

* Most shooting functions, except of course manual settings.

That is very interesting.  Wish it had been available a few years ago before I invested in different technology.

Considering what it does, given the range of functions, it's a good deal.

The only two foibles I see are the dependency on the smartphone's GPS, which I find occasionally erratic, like up the five miles out at times.  It can of course be overridden in Lightroom and the limit of 30 seconds exposure time, it's inability to utilise 'bulb' to time longer exposures is an oversight.  This has relegated it from the top of my shopping list I just use Lightroom if I feel location is important.

I understand there is very little additional drain on the camera, or smartphone batteries, battery drain seems not to be a concerning issue.

This is the map of locations Jeff and I visited on our flying tour.

The image posted direct seems small, here is a Flicker version.

So you have one?
Did you buy it in UK or from USA?

Not yet, other priorities for now, Birna has several, they work fine in the Z's, I know of several other happy users.

They are made in Germany.

Interesting.  I might follow up with you to find out more.

Like Chris I dont like the connection of the Micnova into my Z7.  It looks like a problem waiting to happen with the plug sticking out from the camera body the way it does.

I will see if I can get a right angled plug that fits into the body.  If I find one I will post a link.
