HI There

I have an iMac and a 300gig drive that I used as a backup for my photos on my old PC. my question is how do I import the files from the drive to the mac?
I got it to see it ,then it was gone never to be seen again It looked like it was going to import the files, but instead it locked up in (preparing to import files )
Of course if it is possible to mess things up I can do it with no trouble. at this point I have shut everything down and am going for a cup of strong coffee

Thanks for any help, if any is possible at this point:rofl:

Ed:cheers:

Need to ascertain if the drive is dead.

Is there a power light on the 300GB drive casing, is it on?
Is the drive spinning?
Is the drive Firewire or USB?
If you unplug it from the computer without Ejecting, do you get an error message ? If Yes then you need to re-plug in the drive and select the drive from within the Lightroom drives (I presume you are using LR). Open the folder with photos making sure that the 'Include sub-folders' checkbox is ticked.

Hi JK
It is not dead, it is a usb drive ( the only connection on the old PC)  I do not have LR, I have had problems with Adobe so NOT. I do have Aperture ,and iphoto .
I had shut all off, I just booted the iMac back up and I now have a Icon on the desktop for the drive, I was trying to import the photos from the drive to the iMac.
Now at least I am back to square one lookink at the void LOL

Thanks for your help JK  :bowing:

Sorry Ed, JK got there first.

I would say don't move too much at once. Don't be tempted to simply lift all the data from the external and dump it on the internal.

That can cause the sort of lockup you describe. I tend to move folders of not much more than a Gig at a time when I am moving large dollops of data.

Powering down and re-starting usually sort's any glitches.

If you go to the finder pref's you can turn on the icon for the main hard drive. I have no idea why Apple turn this off by default, it's one of my most used features to access my data.

at least the photo gear will survive and me with water wings, and she who must be obeyed walks on water anyway (glass bottom boat)

the hdd thing is a total foobar or snafu at least for now I think, I will just format the thing and use it for a back up drive, and move the photos another way. probably on a flash drive.  that way I can move only the most important and leave the rest to fate

the cold took revenge last night and got very nasty, I have yet to think of a way to get even so I think I will try to get ahead of it :wine::rofl:

Those that go over the edge are the only ones that know what it is    and if you are not living on it then you are taking up too much space

take care  and be well

Well I don't have one of those, so I get to bump around in the dark on my own. My daughter could do it in seconds, bet she is busy with her own life right now (she is a teacher and that is enough to deal with)

The drive looked like it was going to work ok, but the second time it tried to do a backup there was an error and it only did part of it.  I think it is time to punt:whip:

I got some good drugs from the sawbones and looks like I am on the mend none too soon I must say.
I am sure that working outside in the cold all day a week ago did not help matters much but I had no rain and a neighbor to help for just the one day sooooo no choice
you know the one a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do?
