I've primarily been using flickr for photo hosting, but up until recently I did not realize just how difficult it is to manage privacy on there.

As a result I am looking for an alternative place to host my images...I tried the zen folio free trial and found the results to be sub-par...everything looks compressed and like crap compared to what the processed images look like on my hard drive.

Basically my requirements are really pretty simple.

1) No compression if at all possible

2) ability to maintain privacy..in other words if there is a small set of of photos I want to share with someone, I want to share them ONLY with that person and not have that person able to see what I may have shared with others.

3) reliability. I don't want to have to re-start uploads, or have to wait hours for stuff to get uploaded as as been the case for me with photo bucket when i tried that before.

I don't claim to understand Flicker but I don't think my images are visible by casual browsers, they are (mostly) tabbed private. I haven't bothered to figure out the in depth pro's and cons but for what I want, a springboard to launch images onto forums, it seems to work well enough.

If I have a friend who I want to show an image I give them the link to wherever the image is shown, here or one of the car forums I hang out on.

If none of the commercial image hosting sites do what you need then why not host your own images? A modest website is cheap enough and mostly the software is free or you may even have it yourself already, Lightroom and similar software can produce galleries to suit most needs.

There is also Coppermines gallery software which is used by many sites, my local camera club uses it quite well. I think for a modest single user that is cheap enough from memory.

Thanks for adding your location Glocke, it improves everybody's experience here, it's nice to see where folks are based. Quite apart from the fact it can often influence advice given on requests for advice.

Take a look at Photo.net

It's $25 annually and you get goodies for signing up that are worth more than that if you use them.

Thanks for the location add.
I used to work at Upper Merrion near Philly, big company next door to the golf course. :-)

Regarding the hosting there are several things to consider.

You need a domain name unless you go to a pre-setup place that offers this like Photo.net
Most hosting sites will allow you disk space and you can store files there but also a hosting environment will allow you to setup your own webserver environment or you can use theirs.
Most of the hosting giants are in the USA and they provide very good service. Good luck in your choice.
