I have two MacPros one in UK, one in Spain. I am currently in UK and in an idle moment I upgraded it from ElCapitan (10.11.4) to High Sierra (10.13.6). Now Photoshop CS6 fails to load properly. Well it runs and loads but appears as a shadowed application. I can get the menus to drop but I get no action at all. I do not get the application frame. Maybe I should have incremented the OS upgrade to Sierra and then High Sierra but too late now. I know Photoshop CS6 works on High Sierra as this is what I have on my Macbook Air and it runs flawlessly. I have done a trial load of Photoshop 2018 CC (lastest version as a trial). It too works perfectly. Before anyone says .... Buy a CC subscription, the answer is NO, NEVER! I would rather waste my machine than give Adobe another cent. I know that Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 runs as well as I have tested that. I have reloaded Adobe Photoshop from my CS6 Design Standard disk. I have reinstalled all the Apple and Oracle Java patches. Still no joy. I had a call to Adobe Tech Support but they couldnt solve it and they escalated it to second level Technical Support. I await their call which should have been today but will be tomorrow now! I have been through all the Adobe KB entries that I can find but no joy there. I can see similar reports but some people tried various spurious stuff and then it worked but there was no consistent fix solution so I am left with using my Photoshop 2018 CC Trial until I get a fix or it expires. Does anyone know of a fix for this problem? |

Have you tried a clean, fresh install of OS then CS6 on a completely clean disk? Make it the only drive in the MacPro to start with, just so it can't pick up any distracting files from elsewhere. That would be my starting point in this case. ... Another approach might be to try clone your MBP drive to a spare drive for the MP then run off that? |

I did the upgrade via the link (DOSDUDE1) that I sent to you. It allows my 3,1 MacPro to install Sierra, High Sierra or Mojave. I can try it but I will need a spare disk. I think the MBA disk clone would be an easier option. |

I think that might do it, you could try by launching the MBA in 'Target drive' mode, Hold down the "T" key while booting the MBA and hook the two together with a firewire lead. If you select the MBA as start up drive that might do the trick. That said, the DOS Dude hack might be needed and I don't know how that would fit in. You could always go subscription mode with the Adobe software... Or get a 4.1 or 5.1? Maybe not... |

I just purchased and received a new Macbook Pro laptop with OSX Mojave and it has Adobe Photoshop Extended CS6 preinstalled, so I know I can reinstall my Adobe Design Standard CS6 on this new machine. |

That's good. I suspect the root of your problems is the MacPro 3.1. There may be workarounds but as with most workarounds there are snags. MP 5.1's with lowish spec, or bare bones are pretty cheap nowadays. It may help preserve your hair to invest in a MP5.1. The 3.1 will still have some residual value as a server, so long as it doesn't have to run recent OS or application software. With 1Gb dual ethernet, 6 drive bays and 3 spare PCIe slots, it would make respectable server. |

Robert wrote:That's good. That is my thought as well but since I have other options at present then I will persist for the time being. I have spent half the day configuring my very nice new Mojave driven Macbook Pro 2.9GHz, 16GB RAM, 480GB SSD and 2TB HDD. I am ready to go now just got some final tweaks and I am fit to work on the move! I need to wait for Phase One to get Capture One Pro v11.3 updated so it supports Nikon Z7 and I am good. |

Have you tried Nikon's Capture NX-D recently? It's much better and they have reintroduced the picture points adjustments, they work well and even on my somewhat old MacPro it's acceptable. Big Z files might tax it a bit but probably no more than any other computer. |

Yes it is installed on the new machine as well. It is very good. |

Good, that will allow you to process the Z NEF's correctly, as Nikon intended. You can even see to actual, moment of exposure focus points. I meant control points! |

What is the DOSDUDE1 you are talking about? I have a pro 3.1 and would like to upgrade to high Sierra but am worried about wireless connection as I use a track pad. |
|||||||||
jk

Yes Iain. It does work on my MacPro (3,1) perhaps I would recommend other to do the ElCapitan to Sierra and check ifthe apps all work OK. Make a SuperDuper! clone then step on up to High Sierra. Then check the apps again. I did a ElCapitan to High Sierra step which may have caused the issue with Photoshop CS6. The wireless adapter function works fine after the upgrade but that is hardware dependent (Broadcom BCM4231 module is not hardware compatible) and is a fix via a plist edit or an exchange of the wireless board in the MacPro which is very easy. |

Iain wrote:am worried about wireless connection as I use a track pad. Trackpad is BlueTooth. Should be no issues except some of the gesture controls have been messed with, they now reside in 'Accessability' |

If you install any major Apple system updates then you need to run the post-update installer routine that fixes all the plists. This is the only downside I have identified so far. |

OK. all sounds a bit scary but will have a think. |

It is easy just keep the usb stick that you used for the update available so you can use again, if ncessary. |

Have you spoken to Apple? Use their web site and they will call you. You have nothing to lose. |

MacPro 3,1 is not meant to upgrade past El Capitan The hack works fine but like all these hacks there are wrinkles! |

I think I'll have a go at the weekend when I have more time. |

GeoffR wrote:Have you spoken to Apple? Use their web site and they will call you. You have nothing to lose. In my experience Apple wash their hands of any hack, (unintended modification of firmware, OS or hardware). Their attitude is they don't want their products modifying, rather have users replace obsolete kit with new. Trouble is the Mac Pro 3.1 - 5.1 has no direct replacement model, the 6.1 while very clever and potentially powerful, relies entirely on external storage and expansion, resulting in a rats nest of very expensive boxes and cables. The 5.1 MacPro on the other hand can be almost as fast and pretty well self contained. |

Yes I agree Robert. |

When I bought mine I looked at 5.1 but couldn't afford one so had to go for a 3.1 |

Robert

I was same, that's why I bought the 4.1 which is firmware upgradable, I understand it electrically and physically identical to a 5.1. I paid £500 for a basic spec 4.1 and upgraded the processors, memory, video card and drives, I slung out the two CD/DVD drives and replaced them with SSD's. |
|||||||||
jk
|
Yes I did the same. The latest version of the MacPro (black dustbin) was hugely expensive but the silver tower versions 3,1 were affordadle and the last versions were in short supply or hugely specified which made them very expensive. I have two near identical MacPro 8 core 3GHz units, one in Spain, one in UK. |

Is Mojave worth upgrading to? High Sierra suits my needs and upgrade does not seem to offer much of advantage unless there a unheralded speed or security aspects. On a different software tack the other day all the Lightroom programmes just disappeared off my Mac overnight. All the other Adobe bits remained. Reinstalled and new version of LR running fine and found old library. Just odd. |

Cant see any major value on upgrade to Mojave. Some small twiddles but I prefer to use my MacPro with 30" Dell Ultrascan (High Sierra) than my MacbookPro with 13" screen (Mojave). In response to my query with Adobe about CS6 issue they have gone silent. I have phoned back three or four times, twice the particular guy who was managing the case was busy and said he would phone back in 30 mins, still waiting, and twice the calls timed out. Hmmmm. How much have I paid Adobe in license fees for two copies of Adobe Photoshop from v5.5 through to CS and to CS6, and then Design Suite CS6 and two copies of Lightroom as well as Photoshop Elements (4 copies if you count v3, 5, 7, 11). Maybe Captain Patch will be more helpful. |

Yes, unfortunately they have their set ideas on what software can run on any given hardware. They do support their hardware for quite a long time, I had a free of charge repair on my MacBook Pro at 5 years old and even now, at 7 it has only just reached the OS limit at High Sierra. I haven't seen anything in Mojave that would make me upgrade to get it. (I have several MacBooks). |

Iain, Did you do the update? How did you update go? |

Just a note... Before considering upgrading ANY Mac to Mojave, investigate the new disk formatting protocol. My understanding from reports is there are issues with Apples new drive format which seems to come with Mojave. It seems to be a once only procedure, once the new format had been applied to a drive it can't be re-formatted again. I haven't checked this out myself because I am unlikely to update to Mojave anyway but if anybody out there is considering updating to Mojave, tread carefully. |

I suggest that you dont do a one big step migration but go El Capitan ==> Sierra ==> High Sierra ==> Mojave. I think my move from ElCapitan ==> High Sierra in one step probably broke my Photoshop CS6 install. Remarkably the InDesign and Illustrator parts of Design Studio CS6 still work perfectly. Just the Photoshop part is misbehaving. I must phone Adobe UK Support and raise merry hell as they havent got back to me for four weeks! They promised me a reply within 24 hours! |
