i know theres quiet a few mac users on here ,and if anyone uses aperture 3 for basic editing ,last nights software upgrade is a real winner .the auto magic wand light balance feature is worth its weight in gold especially to the likes of me that struggles at times due to having to take pics in poor lighting . |

Thanks Jeff, I don't have Aperture, though perhaps I should? If only for testing. Somehow I never got on with the original release of Aperture but jelled immediately with Lightroom. I even bought a £2000 G5 tower PowerMac so that I could run Aperture. Silly me. |

Version 3 bears little relation to version 1. Also V3 would not run on the G5 tower only intel Macs. |

I realise that but once on a ship there is little point in changing unless the experience is so bad that it justifies the pain of jumping to a different ship. My experience with Lr has been very good. I can see nothing in Aperture that would improve my image processing and DAM compared with Lightroom but I think its about time I had a version to test. to sit along side the iPhoto I use for testing. Photo Stream is a very interesting aspect, which needs more exploring. |

i use aperture 3 all the time ,the upgrade while being a tad harsh on auto has quite a few nice bits to play with though such a mid tone contrast .and btw robert it now slots in seamlessly with i-photo .if you already have version 1 a upgrade via the apps store might be the way forward ,you also got a new operating system due out shortly ,mountain lion if my memory is right |

I can't believe it... I just read the release notes !!! No longer any need to import files !!!! This makes Aperture a REAL contender. I plan to bone up on it for some serious use. Tom |

I would double read that Tom, I think that Apple mean iPhoto and Aperture share the same Library and there is no need to import to both. You can use iPhoto as a viewer and Aperture to adjust the same images. The requirement to import the images is one of the major issues I see with Aperture. However, I haven't read the small print yet, that is only my impression from what I have read so far. I recently spent 2 very long days extracting the images from a large iPhoto Library, because it wouldn't export them en masse between versions from one old iMac to a new one. I am not a lover of proprietary library formats! http://www.apple.com/uk/aperture/features/#import The easiest way to import to Aperture would seem to be to drag a folder of images onto the Aperture icon. At £55 it may be a little while before I download Aperture just to satisfy my curiosity. There no longer seems to be a 30 day free trial. |

I hope they have sped up the RAW processing engine as that was not very rapid. |

yes they certainly seem to have ,i loaded a few hundred shots last night ,and the conversion time from a jpeg display to a editable raw file was a couple of seconds per picture .i don't have time to play with it fully before i go away but it certainly seems better and as a free upgrade (i already had aperture 3 ) it seems as smooth as silk |

I have had a chance to play around with the upgrade for awhile now and it does have some very nice new features. It took awhile for the download and then the updating of all my pics but seems well worthwhile and it was free which is nice. |

Aperture v3.3 only works on OSX Lion. Looks like I am being forced to upgrade. |

Only if you insist on 3.3, Nothing wong with Lion. Except you will need a ton of other updates to go with it. Just take one Mac to Lion to dip your toe in? It's been very stable for me. I still have one on SL, on a separate partition. If you have enough space on the built in drive you can partition on the fly while running live. It otherwise it has been very stable. Last couple of updates were no problem, since I started putting them through individually rather than letting the updated just do all at once it has been better. My MacBook came with Snow Leapord and I updated to Lion, my wife's MacBook air which came with Lion has never had a single problem. Only issue is I have switched to Natural scrolling to match the iPad, she refuses so now each of us is driven mad by the others machine! |

Rich- The aperture update seems a little slower but stable. Natural scrolling was a big issue here, too. Now a month later, I don't hear about it too much  Tom |

Natural scrolling should be renamed to Reverse Scrolling! It is counterintuitive to move the mouse wheel or trackpad swipe in the opposite direction to the direction of scren travel. To each his/her own! |

This cropped up a little while ago, I think Doug asserted that it's possible to use Aperture/iPhoto without importing (or what I call ingesting) the images into Aperture/iPhoto. If that IS the case perhaps if Dough reads this he might elaborate? I have iPhoto and can't see how to do it use it without import. I have LightRoom set to leave the image files in their set position in my folder structure, so it doesn't ingest the images. I still find the export procedure in Lr messy and inconvenient in comparison with 'Save As' from Photoshop. That currently is the main impediment to my using Lr more for processing. |

Robert- I have used Doug's method but it is still a bit cumbersome and to be honest, I let it go by the wayside as Not Worth It since the older versions of aperture just werren't up to photoshop standards. I pretty much feel the same about LR. My Problem is that I don't want to leave everything where it is , I want my current month's images on my mac drive and then when the next month begins, I transfer the old month to external drives. The photoshop way just works way better for me. There are a couple of killer features to LR and a number of UI improvements over PS but it just isn't working for me as a simple straightforward system. Robert for Exporting go into Library view select one or more images and right click then choose Export. Simple. It is the editing in LR Develop module that doesnt work well for me ? |

Thanks JK but that's just a long way round clicking the export button at the bottom of the left hand panel. I can manage that... What I don't like is the screen which that brings up. It's overly complicated with poorly defined parameters. I takes me ages to go through all the settings and then it dumps the export in some unexpected location, with a name I don't recognise! All I want is the supremely simple 'Save As' which I have used for years and has survived (so far) in Photoshop. |

You just need to change or keep the destiination folder and size as it uses the parameters from the last time. I have full fize or 80% 1024x768 and send it to the same folder. Then I move to another folder. |
