I was trying to do some arty stuff in Photoshop CS6 and/or CS5.
I wanted to clone/select a large section of a persons skin tone to use as a fill for Content Aware but I cant seem to do it.

Any suggestions?

Another reason to buy Photoshop rather than Elements is that some of these features are completely missing or very reduced in Elements.
The trick is to buy as end stock a version e.g CS3 and the upgrade it to CS6. This potentially saves you the cost of the upgrade 3--4--5--6 which in Uk would be around £450!

Do you mean to select as a source or destination?

On Dec 31 2012 Adobe ended the ability to upgrade from CS3 or 4 (Photooshop or Suite)
We are still entitled to a discount on creative cloud I believe

I found this quite useful comparison of the features of Photoshop v. Lightroom v. Elements.

Not quite on topic but am having problems installing CS6 on my mac mini server running 10.8.2. Will install on MBP but installer freezes on MM. Research indicates Adobe say there is a compatibility problem.

I have PS Cs5 running happily on 10.8.3 but I haven't installed Cs5 recently, I upgraded the OS with Cs5 already installed.

CS3 threw a wobbly when I upgraded to Lion but after a reinstall was OK. No probs with LR4 or Elements 11. A prolonged 'chat' with Adobe support left me hanging with a final comment that ' the stand alone upgrade version that I had was not server compatible'

I ditched all the server software when I upgraded to 10.8. Something lurking in the depths of my MM I think that bugs the Adobe installer.
