I have been having a major cull of my mainstream photo's. Two reasons, they have been growing in number and have reached almost 20,000. They were at 38,000 before my last cull down to 12,000. Also having stopped work, I want to extract all the 'work' images and concentrate on my interests. Anyway I have been working my way through them for two days and have reached about one third point when I realised I have not been DELETING all the images, only removing some of them from Lightroom... DOH! I have tried import and there are 2,175 images available to import, so I must have only 'removed' them from the Lightroom database, as opposed to deleting them from the Hard Drive. My question is, before I re- import them is there any way of marking these image files during import so I can easily select them all and actually delete them without having to go back to square one and manually select and delete them all again individually. |

Import them with a specific keyword phrase such as "Delete these B****rds". Just add them in current location for speed, but you can then be sure to be able to search for them. However just after import they should all be nicely grouped together on your screen, you can select them all and hit 'X' at this point. Then goto Photo>Delete Rejected Photos (or use command delete shortcut). That will delete them for you. If you don't do them immediately filter for keyword phrase and follow same steps. |

Good luck, Robert - lucky to have Rich here to help. That crazy LR file import/export goofiness has caused me to delete the app forever... Just plain over designed and nutz if you ask me...same for iPhoto and Aperture...and for that matter, Capture One. All of these apps were created long after Photoshop. How did they all wind up with this confusing file system? And why??? |

Thanks Rich, That worked, I did add the keyword DELETE as a safety net but in fact I selected them all then X, then delete from disk. I think I have some sort of corruption going on because if I try to synchronise the main pictures folder, which is what the master import consists of, it claims there are about 1,400 images to add, but when I synchronise them nothing is added. I though there might be some ghosts remaining so I emptied the bin, and optimised the database but it still thinks there are images there but noting appears after the import. I think when I have finished the cull I will create a new database and then dump the old databases once I am happy with the new one. I am expecting to reduce the images to under 10,000 active images. I will create a new 'work archive' of my old work images once I have finished this one. It's mainly a record of construction jobs I have done. |

I would never allow Lr to ingest the actual files. What I HATE about Lr is the export procedure. I almost never do a batch export, the complexity of the export dialogue is ridiculous and way OTT. All I want is 'Save As' just like Photoshop. I like the keywording and organisation that Lr brings to the job so I stick with it. My answer to the export stupidity is a terrible fluff, simple and quick and foolproof. With the image I want to 'export' on screen I press 'Shift+Command+4' That gives ma a hairline cursor, I select the portion of the image I want and it appears on the desktop, I name it and use it. Done! For reasons I don't agree with, 'Shift+Command+4' normally produces a TIFF, I want JPEGS from my screenshots so I use this handy little utility to change that default from TIFF to JPEG. http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html This free utility allows many OSX default settings to be altered. I use it a lot, it's very handy to make the computer do what I want, the way I want it done. |

I think I have sussed this too, These 'ghost' images are duplicates, they are not being imported because I have 'Don't import duplicates' checked. It is seing the images but not importing them. I have now imported them and used your trick of adding a keyword 'DUPLICATE' to them so I can track them and delete the ones I don't want.  Good tip that Rich! |

Good luck!! I gave up on Lightroom not long after I installed it. I figured it would take me less time just to look for a pic if I needed to than it would to sit and tag keywords on every damn photo! I'm also having a major cull, but the old fashioned way and hitting the delete button in Faststone.  |

Down to 14,028 and almost halfway through, I am expecting to reduce it to around the 10, 12,000 mark. I have just about resolved the duplicate image issues, those which remain are intended. The key-wording is really useful I would be lost without that. It doesn't take that much effort, but I decided to cull first then add the latest keywords. No point in key-wording then culling... |
