Since Adobe seem to be in the business of shooting themselves in the head/foot!
I am starting to look at other options for image editing.

I have had to do the same with my RAW conversion and editing.  I have moved from Bibble5/Aftershot Pro to Capture Pro and Lightroom (to a lesser degree).

So on the image editing front there are two contenders as I see it.

1.   GIMP which in its latest versions v2.8.4 is very close to Photoshop CS.  The big loss there is the fact that I have so many Actions and Plugins that I will lose as at present these features arent there in the same format as in the Adobe product.  Instead there is a scripting interface.

2.  There is a new software called Acorn which is a cross between Photoshop and Illustrator as far as I can ascertain.  It costs $30.  http://www.flyingmeat.com/acorn/
I need to test it more thoroughly and evaluate it but once again it seems to have all the features of Photoshop CS (note the version) but no support for Actions that I have found.
It does RAW conversion very well from my Fuji XP1, XE1, D800, D700, D3S, D3, D300, D1X and Nikon V1 files.   It even opens PSD files but I cant see the various layers.

BTW:  I wont be looking at anything that is Windows or Linux only (as I dont use Windows these days) and neither will I be considering Corel products.

JK-

I've been on something of the same quest, but have come to the conclusion that there is no ONE app that can replace PS.

So now to decide whether to start using multiple apps (and I also dislike LR because the of the issues I've mentioned in the past) or what???

Tip...Photomatrix is on sale right now for only $14 in the App Store - definitely not a PS replacement, but it actually does a couple of things better than PS and does a couple of things that PS does not do (easily, at least).

Yes this really annoys me.
Not available in UK.
Same as in the pst in USA where I bought a couple of Photoshop licenses they were $159 whereas in UK at the same time the going rate was £475.  When I complained to Adobe UK about this I was told that in USA they dont get any Tech Support.  I responded that I dont want £300 of Tech Support I want the same price and conditions as in USA.
I was told this was not company policy.  I wont tell you my response.
And Adobe wonders why their products are on Pirate Bay!!!

Also I have to have two iTunes accounts.  One for Spain and one for UK.  In the Spanish iTunes store I must use Spanish only.  In the USA store you can have Spanish or English.   What is so different ?

Also what happens if I only speak Chinese but cant be in China then I cant use any store as I cant understand the  content.

This is plain madness.  I have complained to Apple over the years but with no luck.
Maybe I need to repeat the complain.  Persistence pays.

I still need to find out about the RAW processing in Acorn.

The Qs
Is the RAW engine their own or is it from someone else?
Will it batch process?
The processing parameters are they stored in xmp files that are readable by other applications.

Do they intend to add Actions ?
At present the use JavaScripting to their own interface.

Sorry JK I meant to reply to this...

The native RAW processing on Macs is part of the OS. Aperture and iPhoto share the engine which is built into the OS and available for any other software to access. Has been like this since Aperture was released I think, maybe even prior to that since the advent of OSX when iPhoto started, but I didn't have digital back then.

This is one of the things you get when upgrading the Mac OS, updates and refinements to the RAW processing data. It's frequently mentioned in the release notes that support has been added for X, Y, Z cameras. Even updates for legacy OS's contain these additions and revisions for RAW processing within the Apple OS.

Adobe as far as I know is entirely separate, using their own engine and codec.

Mac users who are hunting for RAW processing for specific new cameras may find an early version of the RAW de-coding in iPhoto which is of course free with every Mac.

I am not entirely convince of the quality of the Apple RAW processing, I suspect it will be adequate at best, which is one reason I am a bit wary of the software which uses it.

I understand the incentive to find alternatives to Adobe but given Lightroom and Photoshop Elements use the same RAW process as Photoshop it is entirely possible to access the Adobe RAW processing engine with out having to mortgage the house.

Yes I noticed this but I think that Apple need to be careful not to link too tightly the RAW support upgrades with the OS versions.
Ideally OS version and Aperture RAW support level should be unlinked.

There are frequent updates to iPhoto and Aperture which are not OS related, they often cary RAW file updates too.

The OS point updates are fairly frequent we are on .3 already this version.

The more I use this new Acorn software the more I like it.

Issues at present are:
1. The Photoshop plugins like Nik Software, Topaz, etc., dont work.
2. Actions dont work. This is a big one for me as I have loads of actions I use.

Both of these are being looked at by the development people to see if this is easy to add in.

I know this is an old post but I thought you might be interested in this GPL app ---> http://www.darktable.org

I've played with it. Not an intuitive interface (for me at least), but its supposed to be very powerful. I'd be interested in your opinion.
I think its development is driven by some guys in Sweden.

Yep, isn't that cool.
Someone not focusing on Windows.

Anyway, per JK, "...I don't use Windows these days."
