I have just had e-mail from Nikon and as instructed advised them of camera serial no and it has checked out as one of the faulty batch so I will have to return the D810 to Nikon. I am not able to see any problems but it would be silly not to let them correct the fault! The message was as follows:

Our records show that you are a registered owner of a Nikon D810 digital camera.
We would like to inform you that a service advisory has been issued for that product as follows:
To users of the Nikon D810 digital SLR camera
We have received a few reports from some users of the Nikon D810 digital SLR camera indicating that bright spots are sometimes noticeable in long exposures, and in some images captured at an Image area setting of 1.2— (30—20).

Graham,
I saw the service-announcement on a european Nikon site today.
The issue may be limited to some serial numbers.
Owners are advised to read the original announcement (on some obscure potential fault).
Regards, Gilbert

Yes mine is too. I don't know of anyone who is not in the affected serial number range ( which is not published to my knowledge).

But there is a question under what circumstanes you would be doing 30 second exposures at f 22 in a dark room ......

I am waiting for a while .... I suspect that a firmware update might address the issue

I think that it was the astro photography people who picked this up!

It looks as if Nikon UK have done very well the camera only would have got there this morning. I have just received an e-mail telling me my camera is on the way and will be delivered to me tomorrow. NPS servicing in UK has always been very good.

Reading between the lines it seems Nikon could do with an astro photographer to add to their pre-release testing team...

Could have saved them a bunch of £, $, € etc.

Doesn't need a specialist to take a 30 sec exposure at the smallest apertures. It smacks of 21st century quality assurance methods...bang it out and let the customers find the glitches. It's widespread across all industries. But it's a shame when a high tech company with all the necessary test equipment to hand, joins in.

In fairness to Nikon they did turn my camera round very fast it arrived back at 11.35 today and they said it would be 11.20-12.20. They despatched it the same day they received it.

Firmware has been upgraded from C1.00 L2.005 to new setting: C1.01 L2.005

This seems to have been just a firmware update if they turned it around so quickly.
Seems very strange to ask for cameras back to service centre for a firmware update though.

Have you asked Nikon Tech Support if they made any physical changes to the camera apart from a firmware update.
If not then they could have just released a firmware update on the website.

Stranger and stranger!

Just read this....

Apart from the firmware upgrade there is also  a "pixel defect compensation" that must also be applied to every affected camera.
