...D810 + 24-70mm f2.8 lens. John Lewis had a 3 days only good deal on the combo so i thought 'why the hell not...' Still a hefty dent in my bank balance though - gulp!!! Happy new (camera) new year to me! Picking it up from the shop on Friday.   |

I thought you were Scottish! Ye spendthrift, dinny ken , many a mickle makes a muckle! Nice one. You will enjoy. The D810 might need a trial in my hands. The 24-70 is a super useful lens, and is very sharp. Dont stop down past f8. Can be used full open with little quality loss. All you need now is the 70-200 f2.8 AFS VR. YOU KNOW YOU DESERVE IT! |

I might consider bringing over to Spain with me mid Jan. If you grovel enough, I might let you touch it. Lol Eric, I had to take several deep breaths before I hit the buy button!! The camera was £2349 but if you buy it with the lens (offer on till 2nd jan), the combo was £3249. So a £300 saving on the lens - and I can claim a further £175 cashback from Nikon, making the lens effectively £725 from an original price of £1235. They don't call us Scots canny for nothing! :thumbsup: |

Jonathan, I'm quite happy with my 70-300mm vr. There will be no more silly money purchases unless I get a moneybags job very soon lol. The.d810 is already demanding presents and I haven't even got it yet! CF/SD cards and spare batteries for starters, and it's started eyeing up an 85mm f1.8. EEK,! |

LOL well I did promise myself a new camera when I got my job in Shetland and now that it's finished and I got a nice end of contract bonus, I decided to cough up. It has taken a couple of months of palpitations and sharp intakes of breath to do the deed though. I gave up on the d400 coming out so now that I've bought something else, I guess we can expect an announcement any day now!! |

Better buy a 4TB drive to store all the images. Those D800 images eat disk space. I am sure you will enjoy the detail in the image. You need to get back into your body painting. |

Judith, Good for you. I have the same combination and it is the best camera and lens that I have ever owned. I'm not a professional but I've used many of the Nikon D cameras, D, D1X, D2X, D3X to be precise. You will not be disappointed. Happy New Year. Terry Treppa  |

But you will be in love with ultra high IQ by then, so it won't matter  Love your body/lens choice...my 24-70 is almost glued on the "old" D800 and that means no dust Tom |

On a more serious note, Judith. Why did you go for the D810 as opposed to the D750? Or even the D600 that JK holds highly? I plan to sell my D3 and D7000 in March, and I am still debating (nay vassilating) whether to replace them with one of these or wait for a the holy grail, D400. |

The D7100 is 24MP on DX and works very well from results I have seen. Rumour mill says D7200 is to be announced next week at CES in January 2015. The D7200 is to be like the D750 but DX. |

I suppose if the conventional wisdom of larger pixels are better is correct, the IQ of the D7100 should suffer more from camera shake than its predecessor the D7000 at only 16mp. It will be interesting to see if the D7200 will be the D400 in all but name? Nikon may be steadfastly sticking to x000 numbering for DX and consigning x00 to FX from now on. |

Eric, I decided on it after reading reviews and comparisons and seeing so many people waxing lyrical about it. And for the first time, I could actually afford to buy something decent that would do me for a looooong time to come! Hopefully it won't prove to be too difficult a beast to drive. I've had a play with the d610 but I just didn't like it. The d810 felt much better in my hands - a bit like the d200. |

I think the difference between the D800 and D600 feel is down to the distance between the lens and the grip and also the shape of the grip. I agree that the D800/810 feels better. |

True the D610 and the D810 require more care to avoid camera shake, but as I learned with the D610, it has realy good high ISO, compared to D2x etc. and so in most cases the problem is solved with higher shutter speeds. The old 1/focal length, as a minimum handheld for me is now 1/focal length x2. This would be 1/100 sec for a 50mm lens. Consider also that these cameras are quite large and with practice easy to hand hold at lower speeds especially with VR on, which should only be used at low shutter speeds or it causes shake. An small light ASP/C format 24mg pix will give as much or more shake than a D810 in similar circumstances. |

You are right. I followed the faster shutter speed option with the D2X but as you say, it's useable ISO ceiling limited success. The D3 was a godsend giving latitude in ISO and pixel size. It's true technology has moved on and what once was unacceptable pixel density is now quite usable. Maybe the D810 with its higher ISO and sensor developments is not a 'bridge too far'. But unless you are doing a lot of large scale printing or heavy cropping I wonder if it's a 'bridge unnecessarily far'? Those file sizes concern me. But as Judith points out more critical deleting could be the answer. Having not upgraded my Nikon gear for some time, 2015 is going to be exciting as I get rid of the old and .....make my mind up what new to get. |

So, first impressions are a big smiley yayy!! :thumbsup: Also, when I was collecting it earlier in John Lewis, there was a specialist Nikon consultant at the camera counter so I had a wee chat with her. Turns out she is there 2 days a week to deal with customer enquiries (and sell, obviously) so if I have any doubts about which buttons to press, I've to drop in and see her. Good to know. |

I'm with Eric, it's as mane that black and gold stuff spoiles the shot. At least you are sorted, I'm still wondering what way to go with my kit. All you need to do now is get out and take some pics. |
