Well took the plunge and got a D500 I've not had much chance to try it as the weather here today is dull and dark.

That's no excuse Iain!!! Ideal territory for the D500...

Well done.

Looking forward to seeing some results.

If I can find them they are being a bit elusive.

The high ISO seems to be good.

I missed a glorious opportunity today, a Sparrow Hawk, no more than 15ft away perched in a tree bare of leaves, it had been watching me then flew off when I spotted it.

Nothing exciting but taken at 6400 iso with nothing done to it except converted to jpeg.

Quite impressed. Hopefully I will get out more next week and have something better to photograph.

It's a whole lot better than my Sparrow Hawk!

Looks nice and clean. You have GOT to get into the follow focus, it's astounding, even in a hamfisted fashion that I tried it, through glass with a very busy background. It's amazing watching it working.

I'll have to try it Robert, I'm a bit old fashioned as I use single point to track.

Not had much chance to use the D500 as Christmas seems to have got in the way.

You must try it Iain, it's amazing once it's locked on.

I have cancelled Christmas this year, far too much to do, I don't know what happened to 2016, is there any way of slowing time? This year has gone so fast it's just been a blur!

Iain on the D500 use the Grp tracking in AF-S or AF-C it is amazing for BIF with the 200-500.

I'll give it a go Jonathan, I might get out for an hour or two this week if there is anything to take pics of.

On the d3xxx & D5xxx the cameras will only work in "M" mode with non chipped lenses , even Nikon ones.

On the D610 the same lenses will run in "M or A" making use of the auto exposure system.

What is the status with manual lenses on the D500?

As with the D200 and D300, the D500 will take almost any Nikkor lens except the intrusive (which would wreck the mirror) and the pre AI (which would wreck the aperture mechanism).

There is provision for manual selection of non CPU lenses via a Nnon CPU lens list or to input the focal length and maximum aperture on an ad-hoc basis.

This is good news for all those using non-cpu lenses.

The D500 is the Nikon I am least likely to part with, not because it is the newest camera but because it is so refined. It handles really well.
The rumour mill has it that in 2017 we see the D700 or D750 replacement which will be a baby D5 or a FX version of the D500. I think this will be my last Nikon. I just need to thin down by Nikon kit.

Glad you're enjoying the D500. No plans for any Nikon in 2017.

Possibly the replacement for the Sony A7r11 if it has the right stuff for me.

There are some good adapters available to handle all my Nikon mounts.

Well at least 39 of them.

Not if you want it for birding? The extra reach with the crop sensor is an advantage with small subjects. The other thing with DX the focus sensors cover most of the screen, with FX the sensors remain the same size but the extra area is added to the surroundings, if that makes sense? In other words with FX the sensors are grouped effectively more tightly to the central area in relation to the frame area.

Yes with anything telephoto Dx reigns.

A D810 at Dx is 15mp compared to 24mp for a D5300. About the same with most Dx bodies.

Where they lose out is in the limited choise of wide angle lenses.

Many are manual and Nikon locks out even the light meter on them in manual mode.:whip:

Plus 1 on that!

The D800/810 still best for really large landscape prints but for everything else, grab the D500!!!

Certainly agree with that sentiment but for skin tones the Fuji XT2 blows the Nikons away.

Shhhhh. There is a replacement for the D750 coming or is it the baby D5 (like a D700 was baby D3).
