| I have just downloaded Nikon Capture NX-D from the Nikon d/l site. https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/118.html The download seems to have been successful, I need to try it on some NEF's next, maybe later today, my back is sore.

| The Z7 support is in there, I am currently feeling my way about. It feels reasonably quick with D3 NEF's but not sure how it will fare with Z7 images I can't recommend PCIe mounted SSD's too highly, they transforms the MacPro with very little outlay. The adjustment points seem good, very similar to the NIK software. You can use them to cancel out adjustments on small (or large) parts of the image you don't want affected by nearby adjustments too. I haven't worked out the interoperability of Capture NX-D and Picture Control Utility 2 yet. They seem separate, Picture Control 2 seems to have a collection of presets, sharpening... Ah, and contrast, brightness, curves, saturation and hue. The curves are quite good, like Ps, not Lr with preset sliders. Enjoy

| I had a bit of a play last night, I have never used it before so I am looking for things I expect in Lightroom/Ps but not finding them... The speed with D3 images seems acceptable, I am used to the NIK control points so know how to use them... What it will be like with very large files on an average computer I don't know. I know there are sample NEF's from Nikon Z7 online so I may try d/ling one or two just for fun. I will report back.

| Seems quite a turnaround with Nikon going to free distribution... Can't understand companies charging for software which is almost essential to use the product properly. Putting a 30 day trial CD in the box with the camera annoys the hell out of me. Pay £3,000 plus for a body, whats the cost of a CD and software which they have developed already. I would expect it would raise customer loyalty at least a notch with included software. Even money grabbing Apple with their trillion $ in the bank give the major software away, the OS and the like.

| Robert, Do not mix the versions 1/2/D CNX1/2 required payment / product code. CNX-D has always been free to use. The new thing is control points (that many loved in CNX1/2) coming to CNX-D. Regards, Gilbert PS compare that to Adobe's tendency to go for pay-every-month licensing.

| Thanks for the clarification Gilbert, yet I understand 1 and 2 are to all intents and purposes the same as D? Apart from recent versions of 2 lost the adjustment points??? I am well confused!  So where does picture control utility come into this? It seems to be half a program, which should be blended into NX-D???

| Robert, re: versions of 2 lost the adjustment points No, it is CNX-D that lost the control-points in versions previous to the current 1.5.0 CNX-1/2 always had the control-points, one of the reasons many people liked CNX. Regards, Gilbert PS I have not yet tried if CNX-D recognises any control-points made with CNX-2, the user manual says it will. PS-2 the picture control is something entirely different that has been around for many years, I have yet to discover any use for me personally. PS-3 all that contributes to the considerable time it takes to install a package like CNX-D, It took close to an hour on my system.

| Capture NX-D in its latest version is good, not quite as good as NX 2 because, for some strange reason, some of the image tools have moved from the tool bar/menus to the Edit pane on the right hand side. This leaves the Grey point and Colour Control points in the tool bar and the sharpening and curves in the Edit pane. Aside from the Black and White control points it is all there. Once you realise where to find things NX-D is a very usable editor. I would describe it as a bit like using the latest version of Office after getting used to the earlier versions, you get there in the end. Of course full compatibility with Mac OS High Sierra is a bonus (it works with Mojave but Nikon haven't confirmed that yet)

| We need to be really aware that rendering a 45MP RAW file (90MB file size) is NOT a trivial task and you are going to have to have hardware that is capable e.g. 16GB RAM, video card with 1-4GB RAM and large amounts of harddisk for storage. I store some of my processed images as TIFFs and a 45MP image gives a 200MB TIFF file. Enjoy the extra resolution but dont whinge about the extra cost, caveat emptor persists!

Now I know where to find them, Curves, I shall be able to use NX-D just as easily as NX2 but with a wider range of cameras. Not that I would expect it to be particularly fast with a D850 or Z7 image, it wasn't fast with one from my 1J5 and that is 1/2 the size.
