| Having come back into the fold of Nikon and got a fairly decent lens to go with my wildlife needs . Starting to wonder whether it would be worth upgrading my current D300S for a more modern body , logically and financially it would probably have to be a D7100 for now , I would have a neutral gain on shutter speed , a loss on raw buffer , but a gain on sensor size m.p and resolution and a gain on iso levels and certain functions .. So do I go ahead or or stick with the old war horse ?? . .??

Being a Yorkshireman I always hesitate when it comes to splashing out. I have come to the simple conclusion that IF my current setup let's me down in some significant way, and there is an alternative that doesn't do that, then go for it. The key point is to clearly identify what's wrong with what you have. From my perspective, nothing wrong with your results from what you have. But there may be some irritations you see, we don't.

| Well I would regard a swap to 7100 as a downgrade, I avoid the 4 digit bodies like the plague. the button layout and having to resort to menu control more puts me right off. That said I do have and use a D3300 but only to throw in the toolbox when I am doing mechanical or building work, to record progress or keep a record of the position of hidden services, pipes, wires and joists etc. It's rarely set to anything other than fully auto. Point and shoot but for what I want it for it's perfect. If pushed maybe a D7500? Said to be the equivalent of a D500? Top end, older cameras seem to be so cheap now they are almost being given away. Despite getting the D800, I find it's great strength is the depth of tonal range and forgiving nature, exposure wise, almost anything can be recovered from a shadow area. I am still far from convinced the need for such high resolution, but it seems to come with the other goodies. For 600 quid it's a gift, they are out there.

| I don't think there's anything really lacking in my present rig , just thinking a move might resolve a bit ? ? More detail . But not really certain as possibly the crap weather has more to do with it .. And annoyed with myself as I put in pos exp comp yesterday rather than neg and ****ed up a good days shooting , just getting over confident and ****y  my own fault ...Might give it time ,and I still have my Panasonic and long lens if needed , Got to calm myself down and say no

| You can only record what's out there, you do it very well, I would say if you could fit a long lens on a Box Brownie you would still get good pictures. New camera releases don't make the older cameras defective, I have many very good images made with the D1 and D200. The D300S is a very capable body. Save your pennies and enjoy!

| Jeff from where you are now the only improvement you will get is from buying a D500. I could suggest that a D3S would be better but not a great deal a D4 or D5 are expensive and dont give you reach that you get from an APS-C camera. So my simple answer is No to a D7100. I would save for a D500.

| Good advice jk but well out of pension price range ,at this moment in time .. will keep mulling it over , I think Nikon's idea of ever changing new models is coming back to bite the used market on the bum .. I will keep looking till the right deal comes up ..

I will keep looking till the right deal comes up .. I resisted the change from D3 to D4 and D5 as I saw no benefits. I stayed with my D300 until the D500 came. I bought Fuji mirrorless and prefer that for APS-C but the XT3 is still not as good as D500 for Birds In Flight.

| looking at a d7200 at the moment which has a fairly large buffer but hesitating as not certain if its the right way to go ... going off tack would changing my d300s give better i.q in 14 bit or 12 bit or would I not notice the difference apart from burst rate ???

been trying to tweek the d300s for getting the best out of it for b.i.f does this work or would moving to a (latest wish list d7200) improve on it . D300S sigma 150-600 @600mm hand held in strong winds  flight practise by jeff and jan cohen, on Flickr
