I believe Deep Sky Stacker (DSS) is the 'de-facto' stacking software for stacking night sky images, particularly 'invisible' features like nebula and to get enhanced images of the Milky Way with it's gas clouds etc.  It seems the only really capable sky stacking software which is Mac native is Starry Sky Stacker.  While it seems to work OK, I would like an option to use DSS.

I only run Mac's (currently on 10.13.6) don't and want to get into Boot Camp or other emulation software.  Handling the process is challenge enough without having to deal with software incompatibilities as well.

(The Splash screen just kicked in..., And it deleted the Title and Description???)

I have found this software, which claims to allow DSS to run on the Mac, does anyone know anything about it?  Is it idiot proof or best avoided?

Will these 'Onion Skins' work with other software and do they involve getting one's hands dirty? (delving into command line code etc.)

(The Splash screen just kicked in AGAIN..., And it deleted the Title and Description Again???o.O

.... right - that's fixed :coffee:

On the wine skin question, wine is an emulator! I have found wine to be a bit flaky at times - some software runs OK under it but most doesn't. That bundled package for OSX is old and apparently doesn't run anymore - you can install wine for OSX and see if it will run DSS but I doubt it will be straight forward.

My solution to running windows packages is to have a windows OS on a separate drive and simply reboot the desktop in windows - granted you have to wait for windoze to update itself but overall there is less time wasted!

Wineskins and other emulators e.g. do work but as Chris says are limited to some software that the emulator can catch and redirect call to the OS.
However there are others such as Parallels and VirtualBox that do work quite well but require you to own a copy of Windows to instal in the virtual environment.

I tried virtualbox but still had issues with it running windows properly - that's why I installed genuine windows on a hard drive partition so I can boot it up whenever I need to run dedicated windows software for which no Linux version or alternative exists.

Dont like the old Linux boot menus and how horrible they were to edit and change.
I do think a dedicated Windows drive is a better solution.
Multiboot is not well implemented in MacOS
In Windows there used to be a menu system that worked but I cant comment since Windows 7.

In  MacOS
There is MacPorts, Wine and Onionskins as well.

I think I have given up on this one, don't fancy tangling with a PC and trying to run Windows on my Mac does NOT appeal.

The version of Starry Sky Stacker I have seems to get the job done very well for now at least.

Macports works well for the software that I wanted to use.  That was sometime ago before Apple put in the extras we see now in High Sierra and Mojave.
