I am going to Kenya on a bird photography trip in Nov so need some extra XQD Cards. I am only taking the more compact D500 as I do not need the bag full of large lenses with my D850.

New Sony XQD 64 GB card arrived yesterday. Put it in the D500 formatted it and it showed 679 NEF available the same reading as with my XQD 32 GB cards. Put the same new 64 GB card in the D850 and at once it showed twice as much space as XQD 32 GB card ie 1.2K. Back with the D500 formatted the new card and tried again no luck.

I checked firmware and saw it was still C1.13 so with a bit of phone help from Eric (Thanks!!) it is now C1.2. Put new card in D500 formatted it again and still reading 679!!!

Took out the 32 GB SD card now getting correct 1.2K images available on new card. So the firmware up date worked but camera was only reading the B/U avaiable on the SD card. I now changed the SD to overflow and now all is good and new card reads correctly on the D500 as well.

Graham,
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Isn't it so the number remaining indicated depends on the slot selected as primary card slot ?
i.e. if you have cards with different sizes, the number remaining will differ.
Regards, Gilbert.

Glad you are fixed up now Graham.

I find the XQD cards are somewhat problematic at present state of technology as their large capacity can challenge downloading their content while away from base.
In the past with CF and SD cards I used a unit (ExPro Picture 2 Drive) that you plugged the card into and then pressed a button and everything was copied off onto the portable unit.  These days you need a laptop and a reader as well as external HDD or SSD to provide the same functionality with XQD cards.

I used this Unit here.  It is ~£90.

I have been talking to Eric and I think I still may take my laptop with me as it works. I was just trying to prevent taking too much kit as it is going to be avery mobile 2 weeks.

Yes it is Gilbert, but I had only the XQD cards in the slot and the readings were with formatted empty cards and the D500 only showed 675 images remaining with both the 32GB and the problem was the new 64 GB formatted card showed the same 675 but when put in the D850 and formatted in that camera it read the correct number ie x2 times the 32 GB card. I then up dated the firmware on the D500 to latest C1.2 and the new card corrected itself to show 1.2K images compared to the 32 GB card still reading 679.

Needless to say I have not taken 1.2Ks worth of images since this morning.

I think the best option is to either download from camera over USB-C lead or a faster (x3-5) option is to use a XQD reader to your computer and out to an external SSD drive.

Thanks for that JK that is what I normally do but for this trip I did not plan to take my laptop (ie x2 lots of hand luggage) but having just checked my camera case I see there is an unused compartment at the back that is also giving perfect place for my laptop QED
