If true, there is a depressing feeling of d©j  vu about this.

Nikon were sleepwalking through the D2X era but woken with a jolt with the wholesale drift to Canon.
They threw everything they had planned for future drip feeding to the market, in one go....the D3. Phew!

I have no doubt that Nikon have some clever developments waiting to be metered out when the time best suits them. That's the problem.

Its pointless pulling rabbits out of a hat, when the unsatiated audience is leaving the building.
No matter how ground shaking the next 💤 camera will be, some of the audience won't return.

Got to say that I agree.

I bought the Z7 and it is a very good camera but....

The buts are very considerable.....
... The EVF is OK but not brilliant.
... The design is flawed as the people who want a vertical (portrait) shutter release cant have one except by upgrading to the Z7ii and getting the battery grip which is unique to that model.
... The S mount is a new lens system so it is a very expensive upgrade for people with F mount lenses
...  The FTZ adapter does not work with AFD lenses in AF mode so these lenses are downgraded to manual lenses.   It would have been very easy to add a screwdriver motor to the FTZ to provide compatibility with all AF lenses in the F mount range!

I know other manufacturers have changed lens throat designs and indeed the move to mirrorless with the shortened flange to sensor distance is such an opportunity but the FTZ adapter is also an opportunity to keep old followers in the camp.

I have moved more towards the Fuji mirrorless camp as they have constantly improved the camera.  I have been tempted by Canon and Sony moves but I dont like the user interface and menu layouts.  They are even more confusing that the Fuji ones which can be equally confusing wrt to some aspects.
I guess as I have said before it is about personal preferences and choices.
I remain able to use my Nikons and Fujis so moving to Sony which is leading the technology at the moment with superior AF and new features especially with video (that I dont use), isnt going to happen.
Will I change to Sony, I cant see it happening but never say never.

I have turned the corner Nikon has missed the boat. I have been looking at the Sony system with 3 respected photographers including a member of my family who changed to Sony nearly 2 years ago and are all very happy. They were very long-term Nikon users like me. I tried the Z for a full week just after it came out and did not like it. I have now had the Sony A7iii for over 2 months and do not regret making the change.  I have a history of nearly 60 years of using Nikon cameras. I now have no Nikon equipment and have put down a large deposit on the new Sony A1.

It'll be exciting to see what Nikon comes out with. I think what you've all said is very valid, a lot of people have jumped ship.

It's interesting though as of yet I'm not regretting moving to the Z6 II and investing in the Z mount lenses, I've had a bit more time hands-on with the Sony's and I didn't enjoy them as much (looking forward to trying an A1 later this year).

Very much looking forward to testing the R5/R6 later this month or beginning of next too, it'll be good to see what that kit can do.

I'd personally argue that at this stage, very few of the mirrorless offerings aren't capable of great shots, though Nikon does lag behind on autofocus. That being said I tested the Z7 II earlier this year and very much enjoyed using that, lots of advancements in the area of AF and usability.

I have to say I feel quite spoiled with the amount of camera we can get now, feels a LONG way from the D300 and even D600 I bought not that long ago.

I wonder if it is "Lack of leadership " or the lack of backing by means of an Electro Conglomerate who is not involved in the making of camera`s & Lenses but can make all of the electro thingies like sensors and the like, as it is downright "dangerous" to put oneself at the mercy of a competitor...which I view as being the case with Nikon.

Yep, it'll be interesting to see specs and price once it's released. No doubt out of my price range but I look forward to the included tech trickling down to other models.

The common price level I have seen mentioned is £6K which is to me a crazy amount of money.
I can get a very fine medium format body (Fuji GFX100S) with all the bells and whistles for that price.

I have no doubt that having set the bar at £6k, Canon and Nikon will go in at similar price tags.

I suppose it's how you view your assets and how you want to spend your income.
As you know, I see no value in sitting on equipment that gets little or no use, just because it's resale value is below your expectations. It's yesterday's money.

The more choice you have, the greater the obstacle to making that choice.

So if the holy grail of photography (the camera for all situations) is about to emerge in Sony, Canon or Nikon livery.....maybe it's worth paying the price, if it's truly the only camera you will ever need?

We shall see.

What's certain is I had accumulated far too much Nikon equipment (more than I ever needed or used as a professional photographer!) and as I don't pick up a camera often enough or with the enthusiasm I once had to warrant a combination for all eventualities...I am thinning out.
One camera and 3 lenses is enough.

What I find frustrating is that camera manufacturers in general all produce a range of cameras that are always a compromise - they NEVER put all the best features into just one model - so you end up with the best compromise for YOU and then when they bring out a model with a different set of compromises that are a better fit with you then you want to buy the new model. Great marketing and good for the company turnover but not so good for the consumer.

Computers and cars work in a similar way.

I must be the marketers' nightmare - I hang on to stuff way past its use by date! If it does break then I fix it if I can - notice that spares are impossible to get hold of?  I see the government is considering " right to repair" legislation, so manufacturers will have to provide spares and repair services for 10 years....

... and no I won't be buying any new digital camera until my 610 dies and I can't fix it, even then it will be a used camera at a fraction of the current new price!

There are some very nice motorhome but as you say they are too big. Not just to fit in my studio/garage but too big to park ANYWHERE.
We watched a coach size American motorhome squeeze into a campsite in the Loire a couple of years back. The only place it would fit was outside the toilet block.....nice!

Something like this one....
https://mercuryarv.co.uk/vehicles/2004-MONACO-DYNASTY-BISHOP-III-400HP-3-SLIDE-110133.html

They had two awnings over each of two side doors and two sets of tables and chairs.
You guessed it...there were only two people. Go figure!

It had British plates so I went to be nosey say hello and they were Swiss. Says it all really ....£100000+ of mobile maisonette.
I suppose they could have really gone ott and towed a Lamborghini behind ....to go to the shops.

Yes I know you can have a garage....but then you can't flaunt it as much.
I remember seeing some of those beasts at Burnham Market Horse Trials.

They are all great when going A to Z.
But if you want to go A >C >B > F > H .....and back to A, you need something more manoeuvrable.

Problem is as soon as you are 70 you need a medical to be allowed to drive it.

Also nice long leisurely holidays from UK are now stoped by Brexit. Only <=90 days in EU allowed in 180 days!  Thanks need to be expressed to all those who voted for Brexit.

Lol - no problem for me - I have a son with a full HGV licence

The 90 day limit only applies to tourist visas not being required - you could always apply for a longer visa if you can dream up the right reasons!

I sincerely hope that the vote leave camp end up rueing the day!

The only good thing to come out of leaving the EU is that we are not caught up in the vaccine fracas that is going on over there. I despair of getting back to Italy this year

Only in Italy maybe, not in Spain.
Unless you have Residencia + Pay Tax in Spain and are registered to live Full Time in Spain then it is 90 days and out or get deported if they catch you!

You get 90 days entry visa automatically and there after you leave and can return 91 days later!

So there is no national rules so 'Take back control' means in real terms, We are just lazy British so we havent a clue that we can implement those rules that we want! And we are too superior to have bothered to make our own rules.
No wonder you lost an Empire!  Too lazy to do anything!  I wonder sometimes how the Empire was acquired.

BTW:  Yes I will be putting on the census form:  Nationality = European.

I actually don't mind a 90 days limit.
I've never managed more than 8 weeks in the caravan in one go before I pined for my king size bed, spacious lounge, armchairs ......
and plumbed in services.

Well I wont identify the whys and wonts of Brexits!
But people still dont understand that it will effect everyone in different ways.

The Cornish fishermen have just started to realise that they have been sold a pup!

They were always going to be sold down the river - too small in trade terms to worry about. I reckon the euro businesses are laughing all the way to the bank - they are still selling to the UK and getting the same prices but now they are able to get the VAT back on export ... while the UK customer has to pay the import VAT - this was NEVER about tariff free trade, customs tariffs are, and always have been a minor consideration.

Bit off topic ... :offtopic:

Ahem, so ignoring Brexit (I say as a dual UK/EU national (Sorry!)) and coming slightly back on topic... one thing that really bugs me is just how little we got in the Z9 announcement. The press the A1 got by launching TOTALLY out of the blue was immense, Nikon watered it down for no reason with their development announcement, I thought we'd see more in the press in the last week but nada.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to Easter when I've got a nice bit of Canon kit turning up to spend some time with and make some videos about, The R5, 15-35 2.8, 28-70 F2, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 85 1.2 DS. It'll be interesting to see how those compare to the Z kit I've got and my recent time with the Z7 II. I've heard great things about the R5 so I'm hoping it doesn't make me regret my Z mount investment :sssshh:
