| It has been quiet for awhile..modern times have zapped me,..plus all the confusion caused by the Z saga, do n`t get me wrong, because of the Z invasion people are selling F-stuff at affordable prices, but what to get...a D810..an AI-S lens..my head is spinning.

| It’s not surprising that things are quiet. Sadly there are now less than half a dozen people that contribute with photos or discussion threads. All it takes is a couple of them to stop posting for a while to make a deafening silence. From a personal point of view I no sooner got a new camera system and was eager to try it out, than I developed a neck/shoulder problem that makes even driving uncomfortable. Add to that awful weather, omicron restrictions and an ailing vehicle that is resisting repair and I’ve have no enthusiasm to pick up a camera or even go out! I could talk about genealogy and other interests but this is a photographic forum and needs more people to pick up the slack when regular posters are otherwise occupied. Just my 2 cents.

| Covid lethargy and nearing 80 I seem far less inspired than I was. Minimal travel and a year of sorting out my 101 year old aunt's estate have also had an impact. My photographic work has been centred around scanning old neg and sorting out archives. Also trying to sort out a few software glitches like why won't Photomechanical open old images when Bridge and Fotostation will. And why won't recent software read xmp captions when old versions will. Nothing that would interest anyone else. Just wish the rain would stop.

| Forums have great value when passing on useful info for future reference. Being able to look back to see if someone has experienced your issue. Of course people need to be motivated to open up about the issue and others need to be motivated to have a say, for it to work. It also doesn’t have to be directly related to the main thrust of the forums genre. A story……. I’ve been having trouble with my LandRover for a year! A strange noise at slow speed (25-35mph) has left the dealer scratching their heads and replacing bits that didn’t need to be replaced…. as the noise persisted. To me it always sounded like a differential noise but they chose not to dive into expensive things as they were paying. After attaching listening equipment and running ‘in the air’ they conceded the noise was coming from the transfer box which they reluctantly (£6000 retail job) replaced….it didn’t work! So over Christmas I was idly bemoaning my frustrations on a ‘caravan and motorhome forum’ that I occasional visit. There was the usual banter of “what do you expect from a LandRover?”. But I then got a PM. The guy had just been made redundant having worked for JLR Driveline and Transmission Team for 30 years and had come across this problem before (if my description was correct). Apparently there was a bulletin issued …but not in the UK, only in China and other markets…with a potential solution involving changing the front differential mountings to a different spec. His experience (he had personally corrected several cars at Gaydon) was the sound was indeed emanating from the transfer box but being transmitted along the prop shaft to the front diff and into the car superstructure through these mounts….and thence to my ears. The dealers are now trying to find this bulletin (a major task as JLR have made most of that knowledgable team redundant due to COVID and Brexit  ) so it’s not sorted yet. But the point is that it beholds all of us to air problems or items of interest we come across whatever the subject because there could be an expert on that subject who has the answer to your problem, browsing the forum for another reason.I think more than ever over these last two years we have lost some of the impetus and enthusiasm to share/engage with other people.

| Indeed, Well Written Eric, that sums it up, personally I am presently more engaged with my stereo, aquired Valve amps. and several New speakers, even Binoculars ,partly made possible by the situation, as people are selling stuff,often because sadly ,some have lost jobs,even their homes, due to it all, perhaps not surprisingly, the Longer lenses are mounted on the cameras...but motivation is on a slow fire, ...and ,here`s hoping your landrover will be roaming the wilds again soon, personally I am partial to the longbased model 110, which one have you got ?

The mounts are just expensive bits of rubber and if changed to the latest spec versions will no doubt cure the problem! Sometimes I wonder if the whole of the UK has lost it nouse and innate intelligence but either has to follow 'what the computer says' or 'I can only do it if I have permission'. If they change the transmission mounts there are probably less than 8 in number, but maybe only 3, so what is the 'real' cost versus lost time chasing bits of information that may not now exist? JFDI....Always easier to seek forgiveness than to ask permission!! They might even bring some happiness to a customer!

| No - they should be looking on the Indian websites as JLR is now owned by Tata! Another historic brand now owned by foreigners. Not better but easier to ask for forgiveness ....

| The whole world has changed in a very short timespan , more free time ,more people wandering the great outdoors due to covid and rules etc . We have recently had a influx of shorteared owls locally .. now normally we would have perhaps 20 people taking photos through the winter and I know most on first name terms , this year literally hundreds of people have turned up daily and there actually chasing the birds all over the marsh . Causing a lot of upset for us regulars .. a lot of the problems are caused though by Facebook and it’s environs .

| Same here - our country park used to be quiet with just the regulars walking dogs - since the lockdowns started the park is full of people running, cycling, camping, leaving litter everywhere.

A simpler route would be to ask Gaydon to look back at their job sheets for the last couple of years. This guy only left this year and said he worked on Discovery’s in last years. They should have all the parts they called in. Apparently the mounts are standard diesel mounts but because their housing is different to the ones on the petrol models like mine, it needs an adaption…that’s the bit they need to rediscover. Once upon a time I would have got underneath and done something my self but when the b****y thing is still under warranty …why should I? I hope they persevere and find the details ….it’s in their interest. When asked what they would have been suggesting doing next , the warranty manager gulped and said “a complete strip down of the drive system”. A bit of detective work could save a lot of money and time.

The difficulty is that the UK JLR support desk don’t look at international bulletins…only UK ones when troubleshooting. There weren’t many of my model sold in the UK (wish I had done my homework before buying it  ) so little experience of their issues. But this guy said he worked on ‘several’ at Gaydon and at dealers…so there must be some records within JLR?

| Some seven years ago I had a 2012 Jaguar XF, it was supposedly a premium car but quite frankly it wasn't a patch on the Saab 9-5 it replaced and I sold it for a 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero. However, as a result of having a Jaguar I joined a Jaguar forum. What I read put me off JLR for life: Cars in the hands of dealers for many weeks awaiting parts or authorisation to replace something. Design faults that should never have happened. Form taking precedence over function resulting in unnecessary complexity etc. Obviously I won't be buying a new Saab any time soon but their customer service, when I needed it, was excellent. It appears that JLR haven't improved! The place to iron out the bugs is in development, the customer should never find out about them. I hope you get your Land Rover fixed Eric.

I am fortunate? that the pandemic has restricted the need / frequency of use because dealers call the car in on a Monday and don’t touch it till Friday (the remote app tells me when it’s unlocked and if it moves). That’s one of my biggest grievances…protracted, apathetic service. The shortage of available alternative vehicles prevents me doing the obvious and changing it.

| Well Happy Christmas and Merry New Year 2023. I have to say that in January 2023 we are due to have further expense to keep the forum alive. I no longer have the energy to run the forum and manage it so I offer it to others to fund and run the forum. Please contact me via PM if you wish to take over. I have been doing Moderation and Admin on the forum since 1998 so have say that it is time to stand down and either close the forum or pass it to another person. | I am happy to keep it going and take on your role - there is no expense in January. The domain name is paid up to December 2023 and from there on it can become a sub domain of my website which is paid up for the next 4 years.
