| Hello everybody! Greetings to everybody ! After a long gap of almost 14 years of non-photography (because of too much of professional work - I am an Architect & Interior Designer with a SOHO setup by the way), I am now back as a serious photo hobbyist. Back in those days I was doing good film photography - both black & white with a Pentax camera & a Leica Focomat Enlarger and also a lot of colour tranparencies. Things really changed during my non-photography period. Everything became digital and my Pentax camera with several premium grade lenses have become Museum pieces. (Film is still available in India but there is a lack of good processing labs as most of them have dwindled because of the digital revolution). Now I recently purchased a Nikon D5100 DSLR with 18-55 DX Nikon VR kit lens and also a 55-200mm DX Nikon VR IFED lens and Hoya cirlular polariser, etc. I am happy to note that my vintage Vivitar 285 Flash is working fine on this camera. But I am still getting used to digital photography and post processing, etc. I am still unable to make every shot count as I did back in those days with film. (I have taken only a small amount of photographs with my new camera for want of free time). I hope to improve my digital Photography through excellent forums like these where the seniors can guide me in the Digital world of photography. My interest as a serious hobbyist is Pictorial & Abstract. As an Architect & Interior Designer I do take Architectural photography as well as Interior Design project photography. | Welcome to the forum, I think you are the first member from India! Look forward to hearing more from you and seeing some photographs of your wonderful country. One little thing though, the Vivitar 285 Flash may not be good for your D5100 camera. The trigger voltage could be too high for the electronics of the camera. | Welcome to the forum. Glad that you have returned to your photography. Same basic skills necessary but also need to use a computer! We are a friendly bunch here so if you need help then just post a new topic in whatever section seems right to you.

| Thank you everybody for the encouragement. My special thanks to Robert for pointing me that my Vivitar 285 would damage my Nikon D5100. Thank God I have used this only for about 10 shots. I shall use a slave unit instead from now on. Only hitch is that my camera flash also has to fire. Already posted a few abstract pics. One question. Can I post pictures taken by long back on my Pentax film camera? Or is it permitted to post only Nikon Camera pictures? Thanks again, waiting for reply PRSS

| Yes no problem posting any images from any camera. If you go to the Gallery and create an Album for yourself then you can upload images into your personal gallery so everyone can see just your work.

My pleasure PRSS, I would hate not mentioning it and hearing later your camera had mysteriously failed. Not sure about this, others may know better but I think there is a screen which you can put over the flash which cuts or reduces the visible light from your on camera flash but allows the infra red through to operate the slave device. I do use a slave the little Nikon SU4, but I usually trigger it with a small wired Nikon SB16 flash which is used as a secondary flash, well off camera.

| Welcome - you could also use a radio trigger which would allow a bit of off camera flash too
