| D5100 light metering with older manual lenses | Rating:

| My D5100 only works in manual mode with older lenses which is OK. The problem is that there seems to be no way to get a light reading other than with an external meter, or trial and error guesswork. Even the D1 would work on aperture priority and select an appropriate speed. Thanks Mike

| can you not use it in full manual mode ,not familiar with that model so can't really answer properly

| It only will take pictures in full Manual mode, using any other settings gives a "Lense not attached" message.

| For anything critical I take a series of exposures of grass and check the histo for good exposure, then check the histo every exposure during the session. I have used a Nikkor Micro 55 manual lens on a D3100 with good results using that method. If I am bracketing the exposure with other cameras, almost without exception I find that the 'correct' exposure and minus 1/3 stop seems to give the closest to the desired results. I still check the histo for confirmation.

| A, You are right. The camera's like the D5100 have no coupling with non-CPU lenses, so the camera has no way of knowing that f-stop is set on the lens. On the other hand, in full manual mode some old lenses can be mounted on a D3nnn/D5nnn that cannot be mounted on some other DSLR Nikon camera's. A work-around would be: mount a CPU lens (like some AF-S kit lenses) and do an exposure reading in manual mode, then mount your non-CPU lens (and check the exposure on the histogram). | I'm going to try this AF Confirm T-2 T2 Telephoto Lens to Nikon F Mount Adapter, from eBay. Apparently it tells the camera that there is a lense mounted and set at f2.8 so that the aperture priority settings should work on anything mounted on the adaptor. There are various mount adaptors available from the same vendor as the link below to the one I ordered. | My ROXSEN T-2 Telephoto Lens to Nikon F mount adapter ring with AF Confirm Chip for Nikon arrived today and it works just fine. Basically there is a 5 pin chip glued to a T2-Nikon adaptor ring that tells the automation that a 50mm f2.8 lense is mounted on the camera and it allows arpeture priority to function for lens mounted in it. It would be nice to be able to buy the chips and mount them on older manual Nikon lenses, tel converters, bellows, etc.

| There is a feature on my D3 D300, etc that allows me to setup the max f stop and focal length for non-CPU lenses. This works very well. I dont know if the D 5100 has this feature.

| The D5000 & D5100 will only recognize non-CPU lenses on the M (manual) setting and there is no light meter function at all. I will be using the chipped T-mount for a microscope adaptor and it will allow the arpeture priority setting to function. The D5100 has a great articulating LCD, which is most useful, too bad the pro nikons don't have this feature;~(

| JK, re: I dont know Is this an effort to confuse the reader? Cameras like the D300/5000 do not have any Ai coupling, unlike D1/2/3/4 and others. Regards, Gilbert

That provides some new functionality that I havent seen offered before. Seems like a clever piece of electronics. Please report on how you get on fitting it and also on how well it works for you.
