Having bitten the bullet and gone for FX, I am now selling off the DX kit - first to go is the 18-55 DX AF-S VR lens, I bought it for a measly £20 a year ago and just sold it for £50 so that's a chunk off the cost of the D610 :coffee:

Nice.  Great to get profit on a sale.

I LOVE a bargain ....especially when you make money on its resale.

Sadly these days, I seem to be always the other way round....buying expensive and getting poor resales. :needsahug:

I have been doing pretty well shifting my old MG stock - bought a 6 cylinder MGC engine for £95 many years ago - so far I made £300 for the block, £100 for the manifolds and £40 on the thermostat housing - I have the head up for £695 but did spend about £400 having it converted to unleaded and gas flowed. So overall profit should be around £600 .... :cheersduo:

its a really weird market at the moment I was watching a olympus yesterday on e.bay it went for just under £300 exactly the same lens is available from wex with a years warranty thrown in plus free delivery and 30 days approval for just over £200 .. can't work it out , I advertised my d7200 on facebook the other week had people messaging me that it was only worth £250 to  £300 got £400 for it in px weird market at the moment

I agree - there are many instances of people bidding over the odds for exactly the same item for sale on buy it now.

There are also automated offers at ridiculous levels for items listed in auctions.

One catch to look out for is the apparent cheapness of items from Japan - you have to add on import charges and postal handling charges -  they can add £16 to a £40 item!

Nobody bid on the D90, lens or battery handle despite many watchers - so I have put them together as a kit, a similar "kit" went for £200 last week with many bids.

One of the reasons to use AuctionSniper.

And what exactly does that do Jonathon , .. personally if I'm interested in something I set myself a  limit and bid in the last few seconds .. sometimes I win others I get outbid .. but I do study what the retailers offer to .. I very nearly bought a Olympus lens ( different to the one mentioned above ) mid week but bidding went to high and retailers were similarly overpriced , yesterday I spotted one in unused condition with a lens hood ( optional extras on Olympus) for well under market price on a buy it now ,only been listed a few minutes before and grabbed it quick ..

Worth asking around friends to see if they are considering buying a new camera. Some manufacturers offer an extra cash back when PXing 'any' DSLR. I pxed a camera Graham was wanting to get rid of, against a new Nikon body. He got the cash he wanted without having to buy anything plus an extra few quid from the cashback bonus. I got the lens I wanted with a few quid off also.

I agree Jeff. Places like eBay seem to gather silly over bidders...except when I am selling. I then seem to get the tight buggers.
If people want to snipe snipe at the last minute so be it....they will invariably buy the item for more than I was prepared to pay.

I put the amount that I am willing to pay into my AutionSniper profile for that item and tell it to make the bid 2seconds before the end.  I get an email that says the result which also shows the item in my eBay account.
I dont need to waste time waiting for the end or get outbid by someone who sees my early bid and tops it.

That's far to clinical for me jk ,I like the ability to change my mind at the last minute if needed . My I.mac is powerful enough to place the bid in the last couple of seconds manually I just have to press submit

Posted by chrisbet: Mon Sep 9th, 2019 16:04 13th Post
Absolutely - I always snipe when bidding and always try and undercut any similar items when selling by BIN.

That's OK if you are online when the auction ends - I have usually fallen asleep on the couch 10 mins before regardless of time of day (it's old age, you know) - much easier to make your mind up in advance and snipe - I always add a pound and a few pence to round figures - just in case!

For used gear, before I browse, I select 'buy it now', UK only and check the location, avoiding London sellers and sellers with feedback above 500 or thereabouts.  That cuts out a lot of wasted time ploughing through pages of dross and time wasting 'offers'.  I hate sellers who list multiple listings of identical items, sometimes pages of them.  I avoid higher feedback sellers because they look to me like dealers, trading to make a profit, I would rather deal with someone who has actually used the gear and is selling it privately.

Back in the early days I made several friends on eBay, we used to chat for ages after the sale, sadly Ebay has put a stop to most forms of communication nowadays and closed the chat rooms I used to spend time on with other eBayers.

For new Chinese gear, like knock off 'Arca Swiss' camera mounts and suchlike, I check if it is UK stock and look at the sellers business address, only buy if that address is UK.

For highly specialised stuff I have other sources...  Dr Klaus Schmitt (KDS365) has a dazzling array of specialised lenses from which he is often prepared to trade the occasional lens.  Apart from 365nm lenses he also has a lot of very interesting Russian projector lenses, sometimes multiple copies, which he also has been known to trade.

I used to snipe manually, right up to the last second and always bid just over round figures.  Quite frankly I can't be bothered nowadays, if I miss an item, just like the number nine bus, another will come around shortly, often at a better price or a nicer item.

Having been completely ripped off a couple of times with items from America, customs duty, 'handling charges' and having to travel to Preston to collect the item (~150 miles round trip) I won't buy anything from America again, I felt like I had been mugged.

Hopefully the u.s situation will change after Brexit rob . And for a matter of interest I have a 100% feedback of around 1600 so your theories don't always follow .. mainly gained when I used to sell coins and artefacts

Posted by Robert: Tue Sep 10th, 2019 08:07 19th Post
My feedback is just under 100, I manage to keep it that way by asking sellers not to leave feedback!  I would like to be able to block it.  I intensely dislike having an inventory of all my purchases and sold items on line for anybody to peruse.

My username is ~ireallyhatepcsalot... have been on since the early days, member since: 08-Sep-01. The proportion of scammers was probably the same back then but they have got better at disguising themselves now.

I know several genuine people who have similar feedback levels but I still tend to stick with lower fb numbers if I can, unless I really, really want the item, in which case I am less picky.  I guess it's my way of narrowing the choice.  I guess I don't want to buy from a dealer who knows nothing about what they are selling and cares less, providing the money comes rolling in.

I agree totally - I would rather buy from an individual so I can find out the history of the item. Dealers are a pain because they spam offer way below the auction starting price and then snipe later - so I snipe too....

The D90 has gone - I originally listed the camera, lens and battery pack separately for a total of £150 and no takers - put them together as a "kit" for £200 and accepted an offer of £175 - that's another small profit of £15 over what they cost me a year ago.

It is against ebay policy to bid on your own item but I know that individuals and dealers do bid up their items.

Of course they do, all part of the process, firstly to garner interest, secondly to ensure that the final bidder pays a decent price.  The final price is down to the final bidders decision.  Not just on eBay, it happens at real auctions, it's called shill bidding.

I have seen some amazing battles at real auctions where two bidders with deep pockets are determined to win at any cost.  It can and does go sky high.  I and many others with gaping mouths watched two rag-bag farmers fighting over a very old, very rusty sawbench for cutting logs, the type which mounts on the back of a tractor.  It was little more than scrap, maybe worth £50?  when they got to £2500 the auctioneer called a pause for breath, reminding the bidders the winner would have to pay the highest bid, the atmosphere was electric.  Eventually it went well over £3000.  Absolutely crazy, everyone was aghast.  I guess there was a story behind it.

But if I crop to DX with the 610 I'll have 30% more pixels than the D90 and 450mm from the 70-300, will I not?

Birds aren't really my cup of tea ( I don't like tea either ) as long as I can get some good horse photos I'll be happy ...

Er, well yes, sort of...  The big benefit with FX is you get much more latitude in the crop, you can't easily make a DX image into an FX.  The problem with birding that even with JK's 400mm f2.8 and an X1.4 doubler, shooting DX, you will probably need to crop 'till you can see the pixels! LOL.

In other words birding pushes the local length/magnification to the limits, and beyond, unless of course like Jeff you have a nice little hide with beautiful little birdies all around.  If I lived in Flint I would spend most of my spare time in that hide, it's like heaven on Earth.  I would love to create something similar here.

I am sure you will get some excellent pictures of your horses, just watch the lighting and the histogram.

I will see if I can get down soon, I would love a photo of a Kingfisher, they are so shapely and colourful.  My GPS has gone South, so I have lost the coordinates on the reserve.

I think I geolocated them in Lightroom on my return, in fact I am sure I did because I spent a lot of time studying how to get a better position to photograph the Dee bridge with the power station in the background.  I don't have a GPS in or on camera, apart from my iPhone, which I don't trust!  It has been up to five miles out with some locations...

The GPS I referred to is my Garmin in car unit.  Jeff was a bit taken aback when we visited the reserve, as we were leaving I did a fix on the location so I could return on my own if I was in the area and maybe meet Jeff there.  On my return from Scotland in May, I stopped in Tyndrum for fuel and sustenance,  I unplugged the Garmin to pocket it while I had a meal, as I unplugged it the screen pixelated and had an attack of the jaggies, text filled the screen and then it refused to start up.  It still refuses to start up and refuses all attempts to update the software or anything else.  It's currently languishing in the local tech repair shop, awaiting my collection.

I think it needs a clean new system installing but it's not worth spending a lot of money on I have lost most of my GPS locations I logged while in Scotland too.  Generally I can find them on the map, but it's good to let the technology do the spade work if it will.

Use Google maps to find the location, click on it and the OS coordinates are shown in the pop up box.

That works if you can find the place

I do that regularly, but my predicament is finding places like that actually out on the road.  When I have Michael or Christopher with me, they use their 'phones but I won't use my 'phone while driving.  I often rely on my Garmin GPS (satnav?) when I am away, to find obscure locations.  I think I could probably find it, eventually but I don't like dithering and being distracted by searching for a place on only slightly familiar roads.  That is what the GPS is so good at, I am devastated at it's demise.
