Nikon G lenses and AiNikon G lenses

I am starting to understand the annoyance of G lenses and the fact that their lack of a manual aperture ring causes many problems.

Whilst it works fine for the newest and latest and greatest cameras from Nikon if you want to use a G type lens on an older camera then it is a real pain.

Also the fact that when Ai lenses were introduced that Nikon did not make kits for conversion of all old lenses to Ai.

I was recently trying to get a Nikon 55mm f1.2 but while there are plenty of non-Ai versions around at reasonable prices the Ai versions are £410+

I eventually decided that I would go for a 50mm f1.4 AFN lens at a very good price. I can use this on all my Nikons and on my Fujis with the Kipon adapter.

All done in the name of simplicity and streamlining! Perhaps also to discourage the use of older bodies?

I would have gone for one of the pre AI lenses. It's very easy to convert to AI, all you need is a small flat file and a good P0 Philips screwdriver.

For shallow DoF lenses I would much prefer manual focus. I don't believe the AF is capable of selecting the optimal zone of sharp focus in any subject except perhaps a flat surface?

Always possible to get a 55mm f1.2 non-Ai but the 50mm f1.4 is AFN and was a reasonably good price delivered here to Spain.

There were several 55mm f1.2 Ai units but all at £420+ whereas the 55mm f1.2 non-Ai were just about £190 plus delivery from US which can be a problem with Customs. The 50mm f1.4 AFN was £155 delivered.

Bad example, who in the world would want blue ray???

Apple think all media is deliverable over the internet. It would take three weeks to deliver a BluRay movie over my Spanish internet connection.

BlueRay?

I think you could install a drive in your new Mac pro then you could burn your own but not with Apple software, Toast will burn BlueRay I think.

Graham has a pool of steam enthusiasts who buy his railway movies on Blue Ray so there is a demand.

Yours is not the only problem with G-type lenses.
I hear of lots of (newby) users trying macro-extension rings etc.
On a different forum I carry the bottom-line like "there should be a law against G-type lenses".
I have an 1.4 50 AF-D, note it can even be made to work with most older (pre 1977) Nikon cameras by adding the rabbit-ears, common on Ai lenses.
