It would appear Nikon USA has instituted a new policy whereby one can no longer buy parts for your camera or lens. Even the simplest of parts are no longer available according to Thom Hogan. they are forcing all customers to send in the camera or lens to get a $10 lost screw installed so they can stiff you with a repair bill that is not necessary. They are even trying to eliminate private Nikon repair sites.

How's that for customer service. USA customers check out http://www.bythom.com.

Going to be interesting to see if they start this practice in other markets of the world.

Makes one start using the Canon word :whip:

This seems to be a trend for many things. (vacuum cleaners)  Bits and pieces for many things have gone up on eBay just for their scarcity.

As Kathy says it is a common business trend.
In the end they all (including Canon and Nikon) forget that their customers keep them in business.

It is a sad state of affairs when they put investor relations before customer relations. It is more difficult to get new customers than investors. Also investors will return to a successful company but will flee from any failing one.

Dear Nikon:

I have lost the lens cap to my Nikon lens. I looked on your web site at the "service" tab and could no longer find the item for sale. Please advise.

Dear Squarerigger:

We really don't care how long or loyal you have been. Just get over it.

In order to receive a new lens cap, you must send all Nikon Camera bodies and all Nikon lenses you own to Nikon USA so we can make sure the cap fits and make any and all adjustments to your equipment. The lens cap costs $10 and estimated adjustments will cost $750. The turn around time should be no less than 6 months.

We do value your business:rofl:

Signed Nikon USA

PS the lens cap is on backorder due to the earthquake in Japan.

These are both made up letters just to show how silly Nikon has gotten. Have to put this disclaimer on since JK thought these were real.

Gary,
I get all my caps from HK.
They are 'better' than Nikon ones at 1/4 the price.

Just do an ebay search using "Nikon 77mm lens cap"

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150358786625

ROXSEN ebay shop is very good.

BTW: Is that the exact reply you got ?
If it was I would be tempted to send it to Managing Director of Nikon USA saying it is not the type of response you expect from Nikon.

As a Japanese based company Nikon management are very hot on politeness (that is part of their culture that they dont seem to have lost).

Sorry JK, both letters were a joke on how bad it's gotten. Just having a little fun at Nikon's expense.

Maybe you could copy that message and forward it to their board of directors.  Saying this is how we see you.

Kathy, Thom Hogan had a petition circulating on his web site to go to Nikon USA regarding this issue. On Thom Hogans web site yesterday there is a letter similar to mine about a person missing a locking knob on his lens collar. He called Nikon and they would not sell it to him. That's how I got the idea for the fake correspondence.

Think my price of £1.90/ $3.00 is cheaper.
Of course as a Nikon Non-Authorised service agent I could offer you a replacement one for $15.00 ;-)
