Just announced from Viltrox who make very good lenses. https://www.dpreview.com/news/4719680163/viltrox-sony-e-to-nikon-z-autofocus-adapter-lens-options So no reason why Sony lenses cant go on the new Nikon Z series cameras.

Interesting. I am surprised it’s taken so long. That said I don’t really like the idea of moving to a Nikon Z system just because I can keep Sony lenses. Part of the pleasure of switching systems is embracing their lenses. The Sony lenses are excellent but then again so are the Nikon lenses. I recently looked back at my bird photos taken on the D850 with the 500pf lens and they were close to the quality of the recent Sony offerings. Add the fact that, at that time, I was using Affinity Photo app to process the raws rather than Photoshop and I could draw the conclusion that the Nikon images processed as I now do my Sony files, would be their equal! I have no intention of changing the A1. Far too much depreciation loss now the A1v2 is out AND I am happy with the long lens combination for bird photography. I can understand how more serious bird photographers would find the pre shoot (whatever it’s called) capture very useful. I don’t do enough of it to warrant the change. What I AM seriously considering …..is pxing some of my little used Sony lenses for a lightweight Fuji kit that I can walk around with and take more casual photographs. An XT5 or XS20 Fuji camera body AND a Fujinon 24-70mm (35mm equiv) lens are lighter than the A1 body alone…and even some of Sonys chunky equivalent mid range zooms. For me it has the added advantage of compatibility with my Fuji IR body and lens…making a very compact yet dual function kit. Just need to decide which!

I think the adapter is useful for people with two different makes of camera bodies. It really irks me having to have duplicate lenses for my Nikon and Fuji systems. However the cameras provide very different functionality so I just have to live with it. If you go back to Fuji system then if you can live without a viewfinder (I cant). Try the XM5. Otherwise the XT5 or XT50 (40MP) are very like our Nikon DSLRs except smaller and lighter with many more pixels but the XS20 (26MP) is very fine as well but has the PASM dial and the C1-C4 (customised saved user settings) which is good if you want birding, macro, general, etc settings at the turn of a dial. Always suggest hands on trial is best!

At least with the Z series you can use the Sony E adapter - I can't with the F mount and I guess there is no demand to develop an optical adapter to adjust the flange to sensor distance of the Sony lenses. I have the superb Sony SELP 18-110 and a SIRUI 24mm F2.8 1.33x Anamorphic Lens - both on E mounts for the Sony FS5

My eye is on the XS20 as it’s got a deeper grip, longer battery life, the customisable dials you mention, as well as the 26mp which I feel is enough on a DX sensor. Just looking at sale prices of Sony lenses they are 40% of new prices ….so a bitter pill to swallow.

I think there is an adapter for Sony lenses to Fuji X mount cameras. Not sure if this is the older type or the E type lenses. Because it's nearly the same flange distance for E lenses there is no possibly space for an adapter. But of course you want to reduce your lens count/investment but remember the x1.5 factor with APS-C.

I will get the body and try the IR lens on it first.

Which IR lens? 15-45 works well as does the 14mm f2.8 at least for me at 665nm.

I found the more expensive lenses I had, especially the primes were more prone to this problem…but never tried those two. I am interested in the 15-45 or the 14mm for colour landscapes but I need something a little longer for other stuff as well. Looking at the 18-55. I say ‘looking’ but I haven’t sorted the camera yet so all up in the air.

The 18-55 is NOT good for IR but is great in normal use.
