Anyone have any experience of using Hoya lenses from back in the day? There go for stupidly little money and I am looking for something period to go with the FM / FE £15 +p&p  Click here to comment on this image.

I can remember them being around but as they were not as good as Nikon lenses I never tried them.

So many of the period Nikons are plagued with fungus but I have my eye on a couple of AI Nikons if they don't go for too much money - a Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.3-4.5 AI-S and a Nikkor 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6 AI-S

Not what you asked about, but TOKINA is rather good too, got a couple of those, a 70-210 ai-s and a 70-210 af of which the ai-s version is rather good, as usual at full tele setting drawing soft which can be cleaned up by using f8 or smaller,I find the AF version is not as good, they are also small and lightweight,and can be had in the price range that you mentioned.

As far as I understand, most Hoya lenses are made by Tokina, who they bought in the 1980s. Certainly there are many visual similarities.

Well the outcome is getting hold of a Nikon 80-200 f4 for the princely sum of £43 inc postage from Japan.... Advertised as having some fungus / haze but I am used to cleaning out these early lenses following Richard Haw's excellent repair guides. A simple removal of the rear group and clean with a lens wipe saw 90% of the problem disappear - I'll pull the front group out later to finish the clean up. I used to have one before I swapped it for the AF version. Fine lens, good luck with the clean and you will have a fine item. I know who to send my lens to for a clean.

Solidly built - it is no lightweight at 825 gms - nearly 2lb in old money! The FM with MD11 and this lens weighs in at nearly 2kg!
