new 80-400 lens take care

just noticed a very glaring problem with the new 80-400vr lens ,if your going to purchase one via a online seller ,amazon ,e/bay ,shops or whatever theres virtually no way of telling if your purchasing a old screw drive one or the new ones .in fact i,m certain that one seller i looked at had pumped up the price of a old version to just under a new type price .

with no distinctive way of telling and a truthfull description of the lens ,but omitting which version there selling ,a dishonest seller can by-pass the trade description act and get away with it legally .

A couple of point here Jeff, firstly I would never make a high value purchase like this without having the actual goods in my hands first.

I have travelled the length and breadth of the country buying my lenses, I would never buy one without being very sure of what I am buying.

For the more trusting among us, in the UK at least, distance selling laws say you have several days to return the goods without having to even state a reason, just don't mark it!

what spurred me to write this rob ,was i was looking at the price for this new one today and for instance if you go on amazon u.k there are several for sale with prices ranging from £900 to £1800 but NONE of the adverts make a point of saying old version or new version .

so are you in fact buying a cheap new type lens or a expensive old type lens ,,they look virtually identical and i do feel that nikon have not thought this one through properly .i for one would be extremely pissed off if i ordered something and it turned out to be a older than expected model

The old version is AF VR and the new one is AFS and VRii.
I believe the lens elements for the two versions are also different.

Not from Amazon...it's a breeze sending it back.

I bought a lens last year, it arrived in 48hrs free delivery, it took 20mins for me to decide I didn't want it. Booked a pickup for next day. The refund was on the credit card before the original purchase!

For speculative purchasing it can't be bettered.

thats good to hear eric .its not really that i,m moaning about its the lack of up front advertising from sellers ,they must know the two lenses look identical .the potential to deceive is there and i will guarantee that someone will get stung with this one .
i.e selling that tokina lens on e/bay the amount of enquiries i have had about will it fit a d3000 ,d3001 ,d5000 ,d5100 etc is unreal ,most people that are not deeply into the systems will make errors

Do you trust any adverts with small or lacking ppictures?
The old 80-400 was unique having an aperture ring (the only Nikon VR lens having one).
What more does one need for a visual difference ?

I too dislike the G lenses but Nikon know best :lol:

The new 80-400 is a nice travel lens but heavier than the 70-300 AFS VRii that I have.
