55-300 DX lens

1^st Post

Anyone got or used this Nikon lens?

I lent my 70-300 FX lens to friend who then decided to get one.....except for some reason, probably cost, he was persuaded into getting the DX version. I pointed out this would not give home the 1.5x magnification he may have unwittingly enjoyed with mine.

I am concerned it may not be as good as the 70-300 being only 2/3 the price.

At the end of the day it's his choice. But I thought I had read somewhere this DX lens wasn't that good?

The magnification will be the same as on your 70-300 but the lens is NOT the same quality. You get what you pay for from Nikon. A £200 AFS VR lens will not be as good as a £500 lens that is from the professional range where it has AFS VRii and better glass.

The Nikon 55-300mm VR DX is a perfectly competent, light-weight, wide-range telephoto for DX cameras.

It's better than the smaller and lighter 55-200mm VR, with which this 55-300mm VR has much in common. The 70-300mm VR is a much bigger, better and not that much more expensive FX lens.

yes eric i have had one no two of them ,sold the first one to fund something or other ,then bought another one a while later as its such a versatile little lens .good quality ,photos are well above its price point (they can be sourced for just over a £100 brand new if you look round ) both canon and nikon do a lens in this size and price range and there both better than the price suggests .its not in the class of the big lenses but its not the same price or weight either .ideal walk around lens

I read a review of this lens on Thom Hogans site recently as someone I know bought one. I had recommended he buy a D7000 with the 2 std kit lenses but he opted to have this one instead of the 55-200. The 300mm kit was actually cheaper. Thom H said it was not amazing but not bad either.
