After weeks of rumors, Lightroom CC & 6 have just been released!

I won't go into all of the details, as it's a really long list of new features, but you can find them all here: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/whats-new-lightroom-cc-6-0/  Here are the highlights...

Face Recognition

Lightroom searches your photos for things that look like faces, and displays these faces as a grid, ready for you to identify the people. As you start naming people, Lightroom starts recognizing their facial features and suggesting their names for other faces that look similar, so it's ideal for tagging family and friends.

Obviously it's not as smart as you are, and occasionally it identifies trees as people, suggests wrong names, and misses incomplete or small faces, but if you photograph friends, family and other people you might want to identify, it can save many hours of work (and it's more fun than normal keywording).

Photo Merge - HDR & Panorama

You can now merge photos into HDR images and panoramas without needing to use other software such as Photoshop. This is better than using Photoshop or other software, because the resulting DNG file still has the editing flexibility of the original files, even if they were raw files.

GPU Acceleration for Interactive Editing Performance

Lightroom can use the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to speed up interactive image editing. This provides real-time or near-time updates to the image while making adjustments in the Develop module using sliders. It makes the world of difference when using high-resolution screens, such as 4K and 5K displays.

I cant see much in it for me so at present I havent downloaded but the HDR features may be useful so no doubt I will be getting it if only for the faster performance.

I downloaded it last week, free with my CC membership. Haven't done any importing yet, but I'm having a go with the facial recognition, quite slow pulling photos from the NAS, but that may well be the hardware. Will see how it goes from the hard drive.

I just purchased the upgrade from 5.7 which in UK is £59.09
I think that is fair as I can hopefully then forget about any issues with new cameras for the next two years.

I just realised I am behind on this one.

I have just upgraded my broadband to unlimited because I simply didn't have the bandwidth to download updates.

I tried to update my Adobe software, it updated Photoshop CC to 2014-2.2 release. I tried to update Lightroom and expected to be using Lr6 but I seem stuck at 5.7 with camera RAW at 8.7 Sigh!

I have tried several times to make a further update but it refuses. I am on a monthly subscription for the photo suit, PsCC and LrCC.

Any suggestions how to encourage it to update to the current version please?

This is the Lightroom system info:

Mmmm, I think I may have answered this one myself...

I have been digging and it seems for some strange reason I have to manually INSTALL the latest version. It doesn't seem to have been treated as an update from Lr5 to Lr6.

We will see...

This is the application menu:

OK, it's downloading:

But why? My understanding wasthat thes CC applications simply keep themselves up-to-date.

Will report back when it's up and running... Hopefully!

Err, yes, right, sorry about that!

I got a bit carried away with the face recognition software in Lr6! It's amazing, simply amazing. I have set it off finding all the faces in all my general images, I have named a few then it sort of took over! It was attempting to name more faces and asking for confirmation, In most cases it was right even when I was a little unsure myself (All babies look the same to me!!!) I checked dates of the doubtful ones and Lr had it right. It did insist that a stone lion was Michael, but apart from that it's uncanny!

I haven't looked at any of the other Lr6 features yet but if the faces feature is anything to go by it will be good.

Oh btw, it did need downloading, It left Lr5 still in my applications folder, so I just swapped the one in the dock for the new one.

Robert-

Do you still have a licensed copy of LR on your machine? I had trouble upgrading in CC until I uninstalled the old licensed versions...now it's smooth and painless (especially since I hated the idea of subscription so much, it's nice to have it just happen and not remind me of the subscription :-)

There is Tom, in fact I have Lr3, Lr5 and now Lr6, all co-existing. Perhaps I should un-install the earlier versions...

However, I seem to have struck a snag. the screen is going black during processing. I am processing my entire general image files, 111,000 images. The computer is working very hard, the fans are on and although I haven't checked I expect all eight cores will be working flat out.

At first it was Ok but after about half an hour the fans cut in then I started to loose the rest of the screens. All I get are the actual images, both my screens go black. If I click on another application the screens come back to normal. If I click back on Lr, they go black again. It seems there is a driver issue with the built in video processor on the particular Mac mini I am running. I will have to check this out.

Will report back, will try running Lr without the faces section running. see if that fixes it.

Robert, I have LR5 and LR6 installed. I have uninstalled all earlier versions.

The only reason I have LR5 and LR6 is that I am still testing but at present I see little difference so LR5 can/will probably go soon!
