Dave-

That's the story of Adobe... ACR is the hook that nails you to their costs.

A couple of things you might do to lower your cost... Join NAPP and get the Adobe discounts on everything (generally about 10-15 %). And / or search the web for the occasional discount code - though I have not seen any yet for CS6.

Finally, if you really only want ACR, switch to Adobe Elements and you will have ACR and then edit pix how ever you like.

My D800 hasn't arrived yet, so I've already born the pain and non of the pleasure of super res pix :-)

Good luck with it...

Dave, I may be wrong on this but I think that CS6 and PSE10 only work on Intel platform so your PPC plaform will also need upgrading!

However there may be other solutions or are you already set on getting a new Mac.

Sorry late replying. The software is on your PC, but it checks the internet every month to make sure you are paying your bill as stated already.

For just PS probably not a great idea, but at the moment I have installed every single package and I use four regularly for a very affordable monthly fee. I'm looking forward to using Adobe Premier, a step up from iMovie!

I mentioned Elements to the nice lady from Adobe but she said that it had image editor and printing pixel limitations that were less than a D800's file size. I looked into this some more after we talked and found this on Adobe's site. It says 30kx30k pixels, which is plenty. It doesn't mention printing though.

Assuming she was ignorant or devious and this limit really is not a factor, what can I NOT do in Elements that I can do in full Photoshop? I read HERE that these features which I use are not implemented: custom actions, channel mixer, adjustment layers, editing history, color balance, content aware fill. There are also more things that I don't often use.

Those limitations are what put me off using PSE but it is a cheap way to get ACR of the latest version. Also it doesnt have Bridge.
The new Bridge is so much better than the old versions back in CS2/3
