Repairs to Nikkor 20mm f2.8 AF D.Lens dropped on front corner.

Accidental damage by my son helping to load the car resulted in the D3 with the 20mm f2.8 dropping out of the bag onto a hard floor. Ouch!

It has sheared a screw inside but the lens seems to work OK so not so worried about that at the moment.

I have been using the lens but am concerned about dirt or some foreign object entering the lens mechanism, so I needed to replace the front piece.

I finally discovered that by removing the rubber focusing band there are three holes through which at âˆž I could remove the three tiny screws securing the front of the lens to the body. These screws can be removed with a GOOD Wera PH00 precision screwdriver, they fit the screws snugly and the screws can be put on the tip of the driver then inserted into their holes. Correctly one should use JIS, Japanese Industrial Standard but on this occasion the PH00 driver did the job.

I have recently installed a 5½ Inch lathe in my shed (5½ Inch means the radius I can swing over the bed of the lathe.) This seemed an obvious project for the lathe. I cut a blank about 80mm in diameter form some 25mm plate magnesium aluminium, only to discover it had a 12mm threaded hole in the rim! I cut another good blank and turned it roughly, bored it through, then mounted it on a solid steel mandrel so I could remove and reverse it in the lathe while keeping it concentric.

Will break at this point, feel free to comment or ask any questions. I will continue but I have 'stuff' to do and places to go!
